TAMPA, Fla. - A judge on Thursday ordered that a terrorism-related charge against an Egyptian student accused of transporting explosives will be handled in a separate trial from the explosives counts.

Ahmed Abdellatif Sherif Mohamed and another Egyptian student, Youssef Samir Megahed, were arrested last summer in South Carolina over material found in their trunk. Prosecutors say it was explosive material; the defense says it was homemade fireworks.

Mohamed also is charged with a terrorism-related count stemming from a video found on a laptop computer in the car. The video, which Mohamed is accused of producing, shows how to turn a remote controlled toy into a bomb detonator.

The judge scheduled Mohamed's trial on the terrorism count to begin May 12. He and Megahed are to be tried on the explosives counts in late April.

When the rats were arrested one of the guys I worked with complained about racial profiling. Both terrorists and the whiner at work should forget about juries and go directly to the gallows.

Is this good or bad?

Our legal system is complex, but it seems to me that getting all of the evidence in front of one judge and one jury would be an advantage to the prosecution.

Somehow I think that if the two issues are considered separately there will be excluded evidence which may result in two acquittals rather than one serious look at everything which would result in conviction.
