My mom always made more than my dad and my dad was police officer in the 70s. This scenario of women making more than men in a lot of cases, not all of course, has been the norm for almost 40 years.

Exactly. Oftentimes, a couple MUST have 2 incomes just to stay afloat.

It does not take double the living space to house two adults. Nor does it take double the utility costs. It does not take double the food costs if food is prepared at home. If someone stays at home or there is carpooling then it only takes half the car payments. A couple only 'must' have two incomes if they chose to have a life style that requires it.
