MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - A Central Michigan University student who used a video camera and a Web site to criticize an assistant professor running for Congress was issued a letter of reprimand.
Dennis Lennox, a 23-year-old junior, said Wednesday he would appeal the finding that he violated school code.
A conduct proceedings officer ruled that Lennox provided false information to a university official, identified himself as Dick Cheney to a professor and improperly posted fliers on hallway benches.
Lennox said he wasn't able to defend himself because a secret disciplinary hearing was held during spring break. There was an initial hearing last week, but Lennox and the school clashed over whether he could videotape it.
The hearing officer wrote that Lennox refused to participate in the hearing when he wouldn't stop videotaping it.
Lennox has followed Gary Peters around campus with a video camera to pressure Peters to choose between his three-year teaching post and a congressional run. Peters, a former lottery commissioner, is seeking the Democratic nod to face Republican Congressman Joe Knollenberg in Oakland County in suburban Detroit.
Central Michigan spokesman Steve Smith said he could not discuss specifics of Lennox's case because of privacy laws. Lennox had warned he could be expelled. But Smith said the purpose of the conduct code is to educate students "with punishment and sanctions as a secondary measure."
Looks like RedState wrote about this yesterday
“Lennox said he wasn’t able to defend himself because a secret disciplinary hearing was held during spring break.”
Oh no! Double-secret probation for Lennox!
Withdraw all government funding and they can run their school in as Orwellian a fashion as they like.

If you would like to be added or dropped from the Michigan ping list, please freepmail me.
Next chapter in the continuing saga of Lennox v. Peters.
GO LENNOX!!!
Oh good... We need more politicians who think they are God.
We need to help him. I sent him an e-mail after the last development and he says he is trying to find a good lawyer because there are so many complex constitutional issues here that it would be difficult for just any lawyer to help. We need to come together and help him. I’d suggest we start calling the school and e-mailing them non-stop.

What you're doing is a great start--posting contact info for school officials. Lennox would do well to attend the upcoming meeting of his county's GOP committee--I guarantee at least one, and probably several lawyers will be present. Tehy can offer him the kind of advice he really needs.
Could you post the contact info on the MI forum, maybe with a link to this thread? I've gotta run...
a secret disciplinary hearing was held during spring breakThose attending wore cowls and carried paddles.
see my previous post on this thread...
The purpose of an endowed chair is that it is "Endowed"... This particular chair is named in honor of a former, conservative Michigan Supreme Court judge, Robert Griffin... It is entirely funded by the endowment and not paid by public funds... About the Griffin Endowed Chair
Good public universities are suppose to have endowments, but that doesn’t mean they are relieved of any taxpayer scrutiny. He is still an employee of the state of Michigan, he had to swear a loyalty oath to uphold the constitution, and the costs of his office, teaching, etc. are paid for by taxpayers, and he gets taxpayer-funded benefits and perks. He signed a contract that requires him to teach at CMU full-time for three years; the position requires his primary commitment. He is violating his contract.
Take a look at what the Detroit Free Press reported, http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071218/NEWS06/712180372
The cockroaches really hate it when someone flips the light switch on...
I don't see that Peters is violating his contract from the free press article... The article states: "His 3-year contract requires him to teach one class (or seminar) per semester and pays $65,000 a year." Now I admit, it's a nice deal if you can get it... Violating his contract??? I don't see it... Additionally... go here for a Facts sheet about the Griffin chair, put out by CMU in October 2007... Under the Griffin Chair duties it says: "the Griffin Endowed chair was designed to be filled on a part time basis by a prominent political figure." Now... once there is clarity on the issue, this student doesn't or will not come out looking very good... IMHO... He is lucky to have only been reprimanded by CMU for his antics... The best thing that could happen here is that this student quietly stay away from Peters and this issue... Joe Knollenberg can easily dispose of Peters in the election... If Peters is vindicated in the press, that doesn't really help anyone on this side of the aisle...
Michiganguy... Dennis??? Is that you???
Higher education is an elective pursuit like bowling, fishing or needle point. If one persons voluntary activity is subsidized then everyones activity should get an equal opportunity.
