Afghan, Coalition Forces Detain Taliban Facilitators

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, March 25, 2008 – Afghan National security forces assisted by coalition forces detained seven suspected Taliban facilitators March 23 in the Zhari district of Afghanistan’s Kandahar province.

Information provided by concerned Afghan citizens led the combined force to a compound suspected of housing the militants.

Intelligence indicates the suspected insurgents have significant ties to planning and detonating roadside bombs in the province, officials said.

Reports also indicated the suspected facilitators were actively engaged in the transfer of weapons, roadside bombs and their components throughout Kandahar. The detained individuals will be questioned about their involvement in insurgent operations and other extremist activities, officials said.

I don’t know that he committed suicide.

There’s a “death investigation” going on now.

'Several hundred extremists living in Germany'
25 Mar 2008

BERLIN: The head of Germany's intelligence agency said that "several hundred" Muslim extremists are living in Germany and that al-Qaida is forming a strong base in North Africa, a German magazine reported on Monday.

Ernst Uhrlau, who oversees the BND, the Germany intelligence agency, said that "up to 700 people are being surveilled, in different degrees," according to an interview with Der Spiegel. He was also quoted by the magazine as saying that "more than a dozen" of those people had made trips to Pakistan and Afghanistan to try to make contact with Islamic extremist groups operating there.

"Converts that end up in extremist groups often tend toward political renegades and absolute intolerance and highest radicalism," Uhrlau was quoted as saying by the magazine for its special edition on Islam in Europe.

U.S. releases transcripts of Fort Dix plotters
Tue, Mar. 25, 2008

Agron Abdullahu, who once faced trial alongside the five men charged in May with plotting a paramilitary attack on Fort Dix, could get less than two years in prison at his sentencing next week. The Kosovo refugee was never accused of being a part of the others' alleged plan to kill U.S. soldiers. Instead, he pleaded guilty last year to what his attorney called a "fairly technical" gun charge of supplying guns to illegal aliens.

But federal prosecutors said yesterday that Abdullahu, 25, deserves a far longer sentence for threatening national security by giving guns to people "who expressed their devotion to jihad." To bolster their arguments, prosecutors made public for the first time more than 75 pages of conversations secretly recorded by one of two FBI informants who infiltrated the group.

Would-Be-Thief Gives Victims His Phone Number

WBBM ^ | 3/25/08 | Bernie Tafoya
Posted on 03/25/2008 1:45:11 PM PDT by LibWhacker
WBBM Newsradio 780’s Bernie Tafoya reporting.

CHICAGO (CBS) — Chicago Police say no one could make this story up; a would-be-thief gave his victims his phone number.

An 18-year-old man entered a muffler shop in the 2600 block of North Laramie Avenue Monday and declared a robbery. He allegedly waved a gun around and demanded money, according to police.

When he was told the money was in a safe and that the manager that knew how to open it was not there, the suspect had a brilliant idea; at least he thought it was brilliant. He gave the shop employees his cell phone number and asked them to call him when the manager arrived so he could open the safe for him.

The man left and the employees opted to call 911. Authorities stationed plain clothes officers in the shop and called the would-be robber back. The suspect showed up again, waved his gun around again, but this time was shot in the leg by an officer.

The man had surgery at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center and is said to have suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

One officer with 20 years on the force, said this is one of the more “unusual” cases he’s seen.

“‘El Boy’ arrested by Mexican authorities[for Texas triple murder]”
The Brownsville Herald ^ | March 24, 2008 | Jose Borjon

Hernandez wanted in connection with capitol murder of three teens

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A near decade old cold triple-homicide case heated up Monday afternoon when Mexican authorities arrested 25-year-old Ricardo “Ricky” Hernandez, wanted by Brownsville police for the alleged capital murder of three teens.

Hernandez, also known as “El Boy,” is accused of shooting 14-year-old Jason Sexton and 18-year-olds Roberto Moreno and Ricardo Mata with a 9mm pistol on April 25, 1998, on Minnesota Road, according to Herald archives.

Police Chief Carlos Garcia confirmed Monday afternoon that he was contacted by Mexican authorities regarding Hernandez’s arrest.

Hernandez was then handed over to local authorities at 8:25 p.m. Monday night at the B&M International Bridge.

“That’s the person that we’ve been after for close to 10 years,” said Garcia.

Garcia said that Hernandez would under go fingerprinting identification as well through photo line-ups, to ensure positive identification.

Hernandez will also be charged with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, a federal charge, Garcia said.

Sexton was a student at Oliveira Middle School, Moreno and Mata were students at Hanna High School.

Shortly after the killing of the three teens, police detectives said the boys were found shot dead on Minnesota Road inside a white Chevrolet Camaro. They also reported that Hernandez killed them in an attempted failed robbery and fled to Matamoros. He had been on the run since.”

ICE removes suspect wanted for murder in Mexico

PHILADELPHIA - U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) returned a Mexican fugitive wanted for a homicide in his home country. He had been taken into federal custody under a false identity, but through international cooperation, was identified sent home to face justice.

Gregorio Delgado-Munoz, was serving a 26-month sentence at the Federal Correctional Institute McKean, in Bradford, Pa., for a September 2007 conviction. The U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts had convicted him for illegal re-entry after deportation under an alias - Guillermo Capatello-Rico. An INTERPOL warrant issued from Cocula Jalisco, Mexico, indicated Delgado-Munoz was, in fact, a man wanted for murder.

“Returning this fugitive to Mexico is a prime example of how ICE, the Marshals Service, Mexican authorities and INTERPOL work together to ensure that international fugitives are returned to their home country to face justice,” said Thomas Decker, field office director for ICE’s Office of Detention and Removal in Philadelphia. “This dangerous suspect brazenly used a false identity to avoid prosecution in his home country. In the end, the law caught up to him.”

Delgado-Munoz has been removed from the country twice before in 2000 and 2005. In 2006, he was turned over to ICE by local authorities in Boston, which led to his conviction and prison term. The suspect was flown from Harrisburg, Pa., to Laredo, Texas, where he was subsequently turned over to Mexican authorities at the border without incident.

Since 2005 ICE has removed more than 786,686 aliens nationwide. Of those, 14,805 have been removed from Pennsylvania, including 7,700 with criminal records. Last year, the ICE Criminal Alien Program filed immigration violation charges on approximately 164,000 aliens serving time in jails and removed approximately 95,000 criminal aliens.

Chinese Organized Crime Leader Sentenced to twelve and a half years in prison

NEW YORK - Michael J. Garcia, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced that LIM SHANG, a/k/a “Ah Ho,” a/k/a “Lo Ban,” a/k/a “Lin He,” the leader of a violent and organized criminal enterprise (the “Lim Organization”), was sentenced today to 151 months in prison.

LIM pleaded guilty on June 27, 2007, to racketeering crimes including an attempted murder in May 2003, and the operation of illegal gambling businesses. United States District Judge BARBARA S. JONES imposed the sentence in Manhattan federal court.

According to documents filed in the case and statements made during the defendant’s guilty plea proceeding: From approximately 2002 through 2004, LIM led a criminal organization whose members and associates engaged in various crimes including conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder, extortion, loansharking, and trafficking in counterfeit goods.

As the leader of the organization, LIM supervised the criminal activities of the other members, provided them with support and protection, and resolved disputes with other organized criminal groups, at times using violence and threats of violence. The Organization led by LIM also physically attacked individuals who owed the Organization money.

LIM also participated in the widespread operation of a lucrative illegal gambling business. On May 9, 2003, a member of LIM’s organization, acting on orders from LIM, shot in the head an individual believed to be a rival gang member. The victim of the shooting survived.

“Today’s sentencing underscores the exemplary collaboration and work with our law enforcement partners,” said Peter J. Smith, Special Agent in Charge for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for New York City. “Our ability to work together across jurisdictions has had a crippling effect on transnational criminal enterprises that often prey on members of their own communities. Our streets are safer today with Lim Shang behind bars.”

LIM was indicted in a larger prosecution of 54 members and associates of his organization. To date, 37 defendants have pleaded guilty and been sentenced.

Mr. GARCIA praised the efforts of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Asian Organized Crime Task Force, comprised of Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Detectives of the New York City Police Department, and the Department of Homeland Security, United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Assistant United States Attorneys JONATHAN S. KOLODNER, and JONATHAN B. NEW are in charge of the prosecution.

“Denmark: Three Muslims Charged With Terrorism”

SNIPPET: “News from Associated Press, International Herald Tribune, Bloomberg, Reuters and Deutsche Presse-Agentur.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Today, two men aged 21 and 22 were officially charged by Danish prosecutors with plotting a bomb attack. The pair had already experimented with explosive substances, the prosecutors maintained, having made triaecetone triperoxidie (TATP) the chemical used in the London bombings of July 7, 2005.

On September 4 2007, eight people were arrested in the Greater Copenhagen area. The two men who were charged earlier today were among the individuals arrested. There were six with Danish citizenship and two foreign subjects with a Danish residence permit. They came from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia and Turkey. The other men are not in custody, though they are “under investigation”.

The charge sheet maintains that the two indicted men had manufactured TATP and had tested it, though the location of the test explosion has not been revealed in the court documents. State Prosecutor Joergen Steen Joergensen made a statement which claimed the pair had “prepared one or more bombs for a planned terror act at an unspecified location in Denmark or abroad.” The men also possessed bomb- making manuals, stated the prosecutors.”
