Brazile: Howard Dean And Other Party Leaders Should Be Prepared To Step In By Greg Sargent - March 5, 2008, 9:22AM
Despite Hillary's big wins in Ohio and Texas last night, some super-delegates are already suggesting that a continued contest risks damaging the party and are calling on Howard Dean and other party leaders to be ready to intervene should the race get dirtier:
"Despite Obama's impressive victories in February, Clinton's comeback is based on sowing political seeds of doubt," said Donna Brazile, a Democratic strategist and one of nearly 800 party leaders known as superdelegates for their ability to determine the nomination. "In order to clinch the nomination, he must anticipate the worst attacks ever."...
Some superdelegates are bracing themselves to intervene on Obama's behalf if necessary.
"If these attacks are contrasts based on policy differences, there is no need to stop the race or halt the debate," Brazile said. "But, if this is more division, more diversion from the issues and more of the same politics of personal destruction, chairman Dean and other should be on standby."
Consider that a harbinger of what we're likely to hear from other super-delegates if the race gets uglier without significantly altering the underlying pledged-delegate imbalance between the two candidates.

“”I dont think this race will go all the way to the convention. If Hillary wins Pennsylvania by the same margin she wins Ohio (and the demographics of PA are very similar to OH) then I think the party leaders will step in and the superdelegates will anoint Hillary as the nominee with Obama as the VP. And that will be an extremely tough ticket to beat.””
I’m worried that the momentum change that occurred last night will mushroom and that Hillary will win the nomination outright before the convention). I know that she is about 130 pledged delegates behind Obama and has a lot of work to do, but I have seen what happens when momentum shifts. One thing that happens is that some voters will vote for her simply because she is closing on him and they want the decision to be made quickly.
I have a sneaking suspicion that those who want a convention fight aren’t going to get one.
Just rmember 1968.
Your are right. A significant percentage of Democrats would NOT vote for a black man on the top of the ticket.
But that percentage would drop drastically if Hillary were on top of the ticket and Obama on the bottom.
Plus, it's hard to argue with the fact that thousands and of NEW voters, mostly urban and young college pukes, have registered in 2008 just because they want to spit in the eye of the establishment by voting for quasi-muslim "free college, free food, free everything" commie-lib Obama.
Right here in my county, the number of NEWLY registered Democrats just TODAY pushed the Dems OVER the number of registered Republicans for the first time in the past 40 years. (the Board of Elections confirmed the numbers)
Yes, I agree that the old time Democrat rank and file, the union members, blue-dogs, etc will NOT elect a black man for President .....
Which is why Limbaugh, Hannity, Ingraham, and others should have just let Obama win on Tuesday....
Now, Hillary will come back from the dead..... she will select Obama as VP (and yes, he will accept).... and all will be hunky dory in the Democratic party again.
Don't kid yourself. The desire of the liberal wacko Democrats to defeat the Republicans in November will trump their reluctance to support a black man or a woman......
In the end, Democrats care more about getting power than they do the security and prosperity of America.
Could not disagree more.
Perhaps a conventional US Senator or a veteran white US Senator would not want to be VP.
But Obama will take whatever he can get, considering that he is the first viable black US presidential candidate, etc.(Just think, several years ago, Obama was mucking it up on the streets of Chicago trying to scrounge up payments for his pet sewer projects, etc.
Now, in the VP slot, he would suddenly be ONE HEART BEAT from the king of the world.
As VP, Obama could secretly push for the impeachment of Hillary.
As VP, Obama would be privy to the most sensitive terrorist intelligence in the world. Can you imagine. THAT alone would make him the envy of every terrorist, radical Muslim, tyrant in the world.
Obama WILL accept the VP slot if that's what it takes to get into the White House.
Obama sees this race not as his duty to protect and improve America.
Obama sees this campaign as a way to tear America away from the great EuroCentric society we've been, and instead push us into the multi-cultural world of the UN.
I truly hope your scenario is correct.
However, I have a bad premonition that sHrillary and Obama (due to threats from the DNC powers-that-be) will eventually back down from their suicidal course..... and agree to some deal.
It is also likely that the DNC powers-that-be will go to Obama behind the scenes and tell him that he had better accept the VP slot ...... or else they will destroy him politically (through media leaks, or by cutting off money and infrastructure, or by refusing to allow him to caucus with the Democrats, etc)
Yes, Obama would at first be livid.
But Obama seems reasonable enough (more so than Hillary) and I believe he will cave to the DNC pressure, and will ultimately urge his followers to get behind a Hillary/Obama ticket.....
More than 98% of the loyal Obama worshipers will follow his advice and support the ticket, which will be stronger with Hillary at the top than Obama, for sure.
