Monday’s NBC psychic crime drama "Medium" featured a plot line in which an Arizona senator and former POW is discovered to be a two-time murderer and a cannibal. While it is safe to assume that the story was written before the Hollywood writers’ strike, and before the rise of John McCain to front-runner status for the GOP presidential nomination, the blatant use of McCain’s personal history, as a politician and Vietnam POW, as grist to feed the murderous plot is obvious.

On House they actually did have a patient that I thought was based on Obama. He had contacted some type of parasite but everyone believed that it was AIDS.
The senator was black. But no mention was made of the other things you mentioned in your post...lol

House and staff diagnose a promising young Senator with AIDS. The man insists that he’s never engaged in risky behaviors, and for the first time ever, House is moved by the words of another person.
I’d be worried about the public opinion being tainted, but nobody watches NBC anymore-so both the viewer’s opinions don’t bother me.
They make sure there is no confusion by calling the fictional character “Arizona Senator Jim McCann”...

The Monday night episode of 'Medium', charmingly titled 'Aftertaste' was clearly a swipe at McCain, whom I do not support, but this sneaking anti-Republican propaganda into what is supposed to be 'entertainment' is getting very old and annoying. I didn't catch the McCain references because I was tired and dozed off about two-thirds into the episode. Now, I see the connection - and resent it. The producers of 'Medium' apparently must think we're all idiots and can be easily manipulated into hating Vietnam veteranss who were POWs and thinking that Senator McCain is an evil, heartless cannibal.
I happen to oppose John McCain on his too-liberal political stands - but I respect his military service - and find this attempt by some Hollywood twerps - who are probably convinced that they're all smarter than everyone else - to pointedly demean that service with a ridiculous plot portraying Vietnam war POWs as cannibals, to be a very good reason to cease bothering to tune in 'Medium'. At this point, TV viewing, in general, is becoming a burden I can easily do without.
Red meat, as it were. Certainly something to chew on.

Contrast that with Ghost Whisperer, which has had two positive depictions of Marines in Iraq. Well, the first guy might have been Vietnam. I don’t remember. Though, I can’t say that without mentioning the episode where Jay Mohr said something about a “drunken frat boy getting us stuck in the desert.”
I’ve only seen part of one episode of Medium, and it featured a murdered Catholic girl. The lead told her husband they were going to attend a ceremony at her church, and he flipped out. “WHAT? You should have asked me before you agreed to go to something like THAT! Us? Church!?” She agreed and basically said, “It’s unpleasant for me, too, but we’re only going to get clues.”
Yuck. Screw Medium.

It’s bad enough, though, since the character is a Senator from Arizona and a former POW.
You’re assuming that because he was portrayed s a killer and a cannibal, that he was cast in a negative light. That wasn’t really the case. He actually came off as rather decent and honorable. I know it sounds surreal, But you have to remember, this is network TV. It’s another zone of “reality”. It wasn’t particularly judgmental and he suffered no consequences for neither killing nor cannibalizing.

IIRC, that episode was one where Arturo (John Rhys-Davies) was the Sherrif of San Francisco in a American Colony that never broke away from England. He was plotting to become king and broadcasting from the set that looked strangely like that of Rush Limbaugh’s TV show.
Another example of media tendencies was on “Your Mama Don’t Dance”. A dancer was surprised to find out her partner would be her father, but she said, “At least, it wasn’t George Bush”.
From what I hear he likes to eat Mexican.
