After waiting nearly two decades, Rep. John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.) is well positioned to move legislation that could lead the federal government to apologize for slavery and pay reparations.
But the Judiciary Committee chairman is willing to wait two more years, when he hopes Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) will be in the White House.
In every Congress since 1989, Conyers has introduced the controversial measure that falls under the sole jurisdiction of the Judiciary panel. But the legislation was dormant in the Republican-led House and failed to move through committee when then-Rep. Jack Brooks (D-Texas) headed the Judiciary Committee before the GOP revolution of 1994. Despite having finally arrived at the head of the powerful committee, the 77-year-old Conyers is prepared to wait yet longer and is biding his time.
Conyers noted that his bill calls for the president to appoint three members to a seven-member commission to analyze the effects of slavery. The House Speaker would make three appointments, while the president pro tempore of the Senate would tap one member.

Did Conyers own slaves? If he did, I think that he should apologize.
What an idiot!!! Who the H&ll is he going to pay them to?????? AND, who’s going to pay them????
I’ll pay reparations when black Africans apologize and pay up for capturing slaves from rival tribes and selling them to white slave traders.
Yes. It's called his Congressional district. Slaveowner since 1964.
We need to get Obama on the record on reparations.
All taxpayers are slaves, the fruits of their labors are (in part) taken from them for the benefit of others. Apologize for that, Conyers!
To who? And with what? Not my tax dollars! I never owned slaves, no-one in my family ever owned slaves. To hell with that noise. Where ever he is from, you people need to vote that idiot out of office. He is dangerously out of touch with reality if he thinks he doesn't have anything better to do than promote this foolishness.
Still want him to beat Hillary?
The last thing Obama needs is a focus on reparations. He's either got to piss off his base, or the rest of the country. His "compromise" crap probably means that he'll succeed in pissing off both sides simultaneously. He will be rendered ineffectual immediately, and we will be well on the way to recapturing Congress. The reason I don't fear an Obama presidency is that I know how the moonbats will all come out of the shadows when they think it's their turn to grab another set of freebies. Obama can fool enough people, but at the end of the day, he won't be able to please enough of them.

I doubt it matters which of the three is in there. Hillary would do it with an eye on 2012 reelection. McCain would support it for his friends. Obama would support it because he is Obama.
I can't think of a better recipe for a Republican House in the 2010 midterms.
Where's my freaking check at?
nope sorry
All the usual suspects will be wanting to “get paid.”
Conyers is a black congressman who is/was so close to the Communist Party USA that he didn’t need a card. His father was a leftist in the Communist-controlled UAW until the Reuthers ousted them, and bought off the rest, including Conyers Sr. (according to a national political analyst I talked to).
Conyers has the longest record of supporting communist fronts and causes (including KGB fronts) of any living congressman or ex-congressman (we’ll leave out Bella Abzug, the late red from NY City), and Ron Dellums (ex-D - Cal), now the mayor of Oakland or some other leftist craphole.
After getting reparations for slavery, Conyers will then seek reparations for the Soviet Union for losing their slave-states.
He should live so long - NOT!
On my father's side, my grandparents came over from Sweden long after the end of slavery, so I don't owe nobody nuttin'.
LOL, my thoughts exactly.....we should sue the Italian government.
