Hes more apt to blame Americas problems on a shadowy elite who are out to get blue-collar god-fearers but less apt to blame jihadist attacks on sinfulness.
I guess that constitutes progress.
Mike Huckabees presidential campaign may be nearing its end, but those around him say he wont disappear and is poised to claim political leadership of conservative evangelicals.
Mr. Huckabees inner circle says hes the perfect bridge to re-establish the Christian right, which has suffered over the last decade, as a political force that speaks for millions of voters.
He has become the leader of a new generation of Christian conservative voters, said Rex Nelson, who was communications director when Mr. Huckabee was Arkansas governor. The old leadership has either passed on in the case of [the Rev. Jerry] Falwell or become either irrelevant or out of touch the Pat Robertson endorsement of Rudy Giuliani proves that.
Several of Mr. Huckabees close advisers, speaking on the condition of anonymity to freely discuss possibilities, said he does not have an interest in a Cabinet position or in running for the U.S. Senate from Arkansas, but said being on a ticket as vice president would be an attractive alternative. One adviser mentioned a role as Republican National Committee chairman, while another said he might be best suited for a role outside the party
By one estimate the campaigns earned media is the equivalent of $125 million in paid ads, and that was before his appearance on Saturday Night Live last month.
Speaking of earned media, this story is basically an unpaid ad to make him VP, no? Assuming Maverick declines, whats Hucks next move? Ive asked that question at least three times now in previous posts and havent gotten a solid answer yet. A senate run should be a no-brainer but Huck, evidently, has no brain in this regard. A leadership position with some Christian group, like Dobsons, would work but who knows when one will open up. Exit question: As much as our commenters dislike him for his identity politics demagoguery, isnt he an asset overall? Hes so good with the media that we really cant afford to spare him, especially with people like Hagee insisting theyre not anti-Catholic despite available evidence to the contrary. Let me rephrase the exit question, then: Isnt Huck a net gain over the Robertson/Falwell/Dobson model that preceded him? If so, are you willing to alienate him and his millions of Christian conservative supporters by not putting him on the ticket? (Exit answer: Yes.)
Huckabee revealed some unsightly things about himself during the campaign he won’t lead me anywhere. I’ll follow the Lord.
By hanging on way too long, he torched any chance he’ll be the Veep nominee.
He backed himself in a corner and then Romney came along to put the pin in the balloon.
There is no “new” leader of evangelical America. At least I HOPE there isn’t.
The longstanding “leader” is still Jesus. The rest are mere imperfect men like me.
Oh criminy, I just discovered this article is talking about Huckabee.
Give me a break!
IMHO, one reason for this is that McCain is so incredibly awful, no different from Hillary & Hussein except his has more serious mental issues.
He also has kept is so that McCain needs 52% of the remaining pledged delegates to secure the nomination six months from now. I believe it is a good thing, if McCain does win the nomination, that Huckabee will not be tied to that train wreck as VP.
You know the scariest thing about what you say is that it deserves serious consideration as an issue. How did any of these dregs get so close to power?
I put “Huckabee” in the keywords. :O)
There is no way blue state Johnny is going to hitch his wagon to a Baptist firebreather. It kills his only political advantage, the ability to attract moderate Dems and independants.
When I saw the title, I thought maybe the Southern Baptist Convention had chosen a new leader while I wasn’t looking. But no.
Usually the guys at Allahpundit are pretty smart, but evidently Evangelical conservatism is outside their area of expertise.
Whatever the huckster is leading, I will not be following. He needs to go back to Hope, if they would have him.
Agreed - bizarre (and misleading?) headline.
Real evangelicals have only one leader.
Same idea, only you beat me to it.
Not this Christian Evangelical either.
This one should have come with a *barf* alert.
