Someone tell those folks in the South that sweet tea won’t do the trick.

Granny made the best sweet tea in the world. A little bit of tea with the sugar.

"The Russians used to drink a lot of Kambuchi(mushroom) Tea during the hard yrs of Stalin."

Kombucha is easy to make. Not really a mushroom, more a bacteria culture like yogurt or kefir. It comes in a white "mushroom" a "pad" of bacteria culture. Mix tea and sugar, put it into a jar, place your little piece of culture on top, and put it aside where it can work without being disturbed, for about a month or six weeks, depending on temp, etc. Tasty!

Thanks for the word on cinnamon. I hadn’t seen the newer research reports.

Hmmm...that’s odd. Cinnamon alone brought my blood sugar down and I’ve noticed that if I don’t take it for more than a week, my sugar begins to creep back up again. I think the drug companies are trying to talk it down. Diabetes is their bread and butter.

Free Republic has a team of about 250 FReepers who donate their unused computer time to a distributed computing effort from Stanford University called Folding@home.

Using around 200,000 computers and PS3s, we are part of a basic research effort to help discover treatments for Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, cancer and diabetes.

Folding@home sends out fragments of proteins to our computers, which we then process and send back in a few days or a few weeks. The process is very secure and will not expose your system to spyware or viruses.

Please consider joining our humble team by downloading the program here:

entering your FReep name and team 36120.

After all, the life you save may be your own!

Have you used “bitter melon”? It’s been part of my routine for a while(along with cinnamon and other things) now and I’m staying off the insulin so far too....

Well, all I can say is the latest well-done study shows no beneficial effect. However, as they say over at the ADA type II forum, “your mileage may vary”. Apparently, different foods affect people differently.

If you are interested, the American Diabetes Assoc. site has excellent diabetes forums. The discussion group for type II is really informative.

BTW, for you who have found that cinnamon helps your blood sugar, have you tested it by having 2 identical meals, only adding cinnamon with one, and then checking your numbers later? I would be curious to see if it made a difference in your after meal numbers.

BTW, there is also some concern about taking large amounts of cinnamon due to some toxicity associated with it, so there is a product out there called Cinnulin PF that is a water soluble form that says it eliminates that problem. It is available in several products from various supplement companies such as Puritan’s Pride and probably GNC.

I haven’t checked blood sugar, yet, but that age is arriving. :-)

My son had a glucose level problem about two years ago. He wasn't diabetic but his blood sugar level was erratic.

He read about a study that indicated cinnamon can be beneficial in regulating

He tried it and it worked...still does.
