I thought Crist was crazy at first too. Now I think he might be crazy like a fox. Republicans might cross over en masse to vote for Hillary, obviating the selection of a Democratic candidate without the Superdelegates. The Democrats would have no choice but to accept (and seat) the results.
Can you imagine the pressure on Democratic Governor Granholm of (broke) Michigan? She would have no good options.
If nothing else, this puts pressure on Dean even if the idea is never accepted.
Florida is a closed primary state. I doubt they would reopen registration to allow Republicans to change their affiliation and crossover, since that would potentially allow Florida Republicans to vote twice.
Sorry, but in Florida Repubs cannot vote Dem, or visa-versa in any primary - ours are closed primaries. We can cross party lines in the General Election ONLY!
There were a few glitches in the southern counties (heavy dem areas) that gave ballots to Independent voters and told them to choose a party, but that was illegal and not normally allowed.
Then again, what's normal about a Dem?
Florida is not a crossover state. Any Republicans who wanted to vote in a RAT “do-over” primary would have to register as RATs 30 days before the election. The RATs would probably want a rule change that would prohibit any re-registration and Governor I Want Everybody To Like Me Crist would dutifully comply.
