BAGRAM AIR BASE, Afghanistan, Feb. 29, 2008 Villagers living in the Surkh district of Afghanistans Nangarhar province received humanitarian assistance from Afghan and coalition forces Feb. 24.
Nearly 200 villagers from Barihah Village and the surrounding area arrived at a humanitarian site to receive much-needed items to help them get through the severe winter weather, where storms have dumped several feet of snow and temperatures have dipped below freezing.
Families were provided food staples such as rice, beans and flour, and the Afghan troops also handed out winter jackets, shoes and blankets. Children also received school supplies and toys.
Villagers expressed their appreciation.
Thank you for taking care of us, said one villager, who received food and other supplies from the Afghan soldiers.
Many residents said they had no other options to support their families and that multiple attempts by the villagers to resupply their own food and fuel stocks during the winter have failed.
