Canada's prime minister warns US it would be making a mistake to reopen NAFTA

Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Thursday the United States should not reopen talks on the North American Free Trade Agreement as the two U.S. Democratic presidential hopefuls have proposed.

Harper warned that renewed talks would give Canada the chance to renegotiate the pact so that it is more favorable to his country.

"If any American government chose to make the mistake of reopening that we would have some things we would want to talk about as well," Harper said.

Trade minister David Emerson said Wednesday it would be unwise for the U.S. to renegotiate NAFTA because the it has a good deal when it comes to access to Canada's oil.

Emerson noted that Canada is the largest energy supplier to the U.S.

The 15-year-old trade pact is unpopular with blue-collar workers in the U.S. Some argue it has cost the country jobs.

Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama have threatened to invoke NAFTA's six-month termination clause if it is not re-negotiated.

Ah yes the Democrat approach to foreign policy. Talk with our enemies and antagonize our most important allies.

I thought that Obama's people had already called the Canadian goverment and told them that he didn't really mean any of it.

Sad irony if one of these twits becomes you next President - for years you had to endure contants BS from our lefty Prime Minister, now we have one who is palatable, at last, and America looks as though it will do an about face.....

And the US makes it possible for you to not have to invest in your military to the extent that you might otherwise. I don't support screwing our allies but sometimes people should recognize a good thing as well.

whether they did or not...you don’t screw around with the world just for cheap political points
(I should point out that this is not as if either of the 2 candidates had a principled, consistent opposition to NAFTA. This was only brought up for Ohio)

Free Trade agreements into the trash can. Period. The tool of the One World mob, hellbent on killing soverignty. The radical left has already proven it has the skill set to destroy American economic, political and military strength.

Let us not make the same mistake twice.

Sad, indeed. Won’t happen if my vote makes a difference.

But it’s not looking good.

As an ex-Canadian, those loser lefties in Canada who pray and drool for a liberal lefty president will get their wish.

Unfortunately for these anti Americans (a vast majority of Canucks are due to CBC propaganda), NAFTA is just the start.

They're literally frothing at the mouth up here. Little do they know how damaging it is going to be for everyone.

So, apparently, Canada is unhappy with NAFTA as well! All the more reason to re-open the issue and place everything on the table - include a possible complete dissolution of the treaty.

Regards,

NAFTA is not a free trade deal. It is socialized trade, as both Alan Keyes, Ron Paul and others have pointed out. Same with CAFTA, WTO etc. Globalist sovereignty destroyers, all of them. Anyone who wants to ship finished goods into America should pay for the privilege of bringing goods through our ports and over infrastructure that we have already paid for. That means tariffs, although not necessarily high ones. In return, the personal income tax and small business taxes should be phased out and replaced with NOTHING.

NAFTA...in my humble opinion...is kinda like the Kyoto Treaty...where the public and the idiots who signed the treaty...didn’t know much about it.

I don’t see NAFTA going away...but certainly a revisit to the table and changing five points...might help the US greatly. I wouldn’t go to the table with amnesty for all Mexicans...but I’d be willing to offer up some simple visa operation to get some key points back into this...to help the US consumer and worker out. The idea of Chevy and Ford moving more operations to Mexico...is idiotic. So I’d make these companies pay a fee to bring cars into the US. The US consumer can decide if he wants to pay extra or ask for an American-made car.
