Like a little girl whose Chief Executive Barbie is falling from her fingertips into the sea, Hillary Rodham Clintons presidential ambitions are slipping tragically from her grasp. This may explain her increasingly unhinged behavior, which would be bad enough were she winning. To lose this way, however, is particularly pathetic.
Consider her campaigns reported peddling of a photo of Barack Obama in traditional Somali clothing. Emerging soon before Tuesdays Texas and Ohio primaries, this was more than a zany picture of an exotically dressed pol, like that of Clinton herself touring Vietnam in a sloped hat. This 2006 photo, snapped during a five-nation African fact-finding mission, could ignite suspicions that Obama is a closet Muslim, a turban-clad terrorist sympathizer or that other surprises may lurk just beneath his black skin.
Team Clinton could have stamped out any suspicions they were behind this, just as forcefully as Team McCain doused The New York Times [NYT] front-page news story asserting inappropriate ties between him and a female lobbyist. John McCain personally rejected these allegations at a 9 a.m. press conference. By noon, these accusations were extinguished, and the Old Gray Ladys dwindling reputation was reduced to cinders.
Clintons team quickly could have refuted the Drudge Reports claim that it e-mailed this photo while writing: Wouldnt we be seeing this on the cover of every magazine if it were HRC?
Instead, a senior Clinton staffer told Fox News on Monday: There are 700 people in our organization. We cant be sure it didnt come from us. Clinton later said, I know nothing about it.
This would be more plausible if this were the Clinton camps first suspected anti-Obama smear. Alas, as Obamas political guru, David Plouffe, observed, This is part of a disturbing pattern that led her county chairs to resign in Iowa, her campaign chairman to resign in New Hampshire and its exactly the kind of divisive politics that turns away Americans.
At a Feb. 21 debate, Clinton seemed especially conciliatory toward her rival. I am honored to be here with Barack Obama, she said, shaking his hand. I am absolutely honored.
Two days later in Cincinnati, she came undone.
Shame on you, Barack Obama! Clinton snapped. Enough with the speeches, and the big rallies, and then using tactics that are right out of Karl Roves playbook.
Clinton somehow suddenly discovered leaflets that Obamas campaign has mailed out for weeks in Ohio. She complained that Obama portrayed her as pro-NAFTA, though she now says she wants the pact renegotiated or scrapped.
Obamas perspective is correct.
In her 2003 book, Living History, Clinton warmly calls the North American Free Trade Agreement one of Bills legislative victories.
I think, on balance, NAFTA has been good for New York and America, she said in 2004.
Obama finds Clintons malleability on NAFTA puzzling.
She has essentially presented herself as co-president during the Clinton years, he said. So, the notion that you can selectively pick what you take credit for and then run away from what isnt politically convenient, that doesnt make sense.
Polls show Texas and Ohio voters cooling toward Clinton. They clearly see what now is beyond disguise: The big ideas fueling Clintons candidacy are blind ambition, an unbecoming sense of entitlement and a thirst for power that all the Gatorade in Gainesville could not quench.
nice finish, though ... not Steynian but showing a little promise.
Good article. Thanks for posting. Humpty Hillary BUMP!
Hillary and Bill are so desperate, but the end result of her strategy is that it looks like she's having extreme mood swings.
Carefully, without fingerprints on it.
I am shocked why people don’t like Hillary.
If she wins this reporter better hide his pets.
Whether she wins or loses, I predict that there will be mysterious deaths.
I so enjoy watching her breakdown right before my eyes! Party on!....
She’s honored to be the first female candidate (she’s not but in her mind she is)along with the first black candidate. She’s not honored to be with Barak per se.

Hillary Clinton suffered bouts of depression as U.S. First Lady
Beauty is only skin deep.
Not when you have Photoshop.
That’s just creepy.
Hillary never had grace or class.
In this case, "renegotiated" means having her name on it, not Bill's.
Dona Brazille sorta gave herself away with her statement.
I suspect Donna approved it — she was brought in to shake up the Hillary staff.
Only problem is — Donna Brazille is an idiot, proved by her involvement in the Gore 2000 campaign. He was backtracking comments on a weekly basis.
If Obama delivers the knockout blow, then expect Hillary to be offered Senate Majority Leader, in exchange for bowing out and endoring Obama.
She even had a hard time acting like she had any.
Do mean like McCain has been undermining George Bush since he lost the nomination in 2000? It certainly seems to be a strategy that paid off for Senator McCain.
I’d hit the one on right!
