"This ammo has been around since the early 1960’s! If you reload .12 Guage, just fill it with finishing nails instead of lead shot."

Please read the article. It is not about shotgun shells. It mentions .40 caliber handgun rounds, but no shotgun-pistols or anything of the sort.

The US Army looked at this kind of ammo in the post WWII period. Ammo was tested, but in the end the 5.56x 45 was selected for the same reason - low recoil, low weight.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flechette

The 5.7 x 28 in military issue will do this as will old Russian ammo (steel penetrator)

This is the ONLY mention of caliber.

“Hill shot the vest with a .40-caliber firearm. The bullet did not penetrate the 15-year-old vest.”

So, what was he shooting that delivers steel darts?

It does not say what the darts were in. The .40 mentioned was only for comparison.

The ammo described sounds like a long-available 12ga round.

The article is poorly written and confusing. If you follow the link in the original post, there’s a video link on the story page showing the reporter and the firearms instructor shooting a dummy with vest with a shotgun, then with a handgun.

The ‘new and dangerous’ ammunition is a 12-gauge flechette round. As several posters have mentioned, that round has been available for years.

Not sure why they shot the vest with the handgun. I guess just to show that it would stand up to what it’s designed for.
