A Microsoft Corp. executive last year said the software company made a mistake by lowering the minimum technical requirements needed to run Windows Vista, a decision he said was made to help Intel Corp. meet its quarterly earnings, according to internal emails disclosed this week. The emails provide a glimpse into how Microsoft executives and hardware partners grappled with technical glitches and other problems as they prepared the long-awaited Windows Vista software for market. The emails were released as part of a federal class-action suit alleging that Microsoft's marketing program for Windows Vista misled consumers. In several of the emails, Microsoft executives appear to be planning how they will explain to Microsoft Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner how a branding program implied that certain PCs were technically capable of running Windows Vista operating system when, in fact, they weren't. The emails also show how Microsoft executives struggled to respond to complaints from a Microsoft board member about technical problems he had encountered.

I recommend purchasing a MAC. Yeah they’re a bit more expensive, but you can buy refurbished ones that are as good as new from Apple.com. Mine have been very reliable (iMac and macbook). I’m very glad I made the switch. I can even run windows applications on it, but I rarely do that. Consider looking into it if you haven’t already, you might be surprised!
What does it do in the alternative?
it has *SUCH* a bad reputation that if developers haven't yet ported their products to Vista, they may look at possible sales and take a pass, waiting for Windows 2008
Most people tell me that Vista is C_ _ _, but hard to find them without Vista.

Dell is more than glad to build them with XP. I would go heavy on the RAM in a small chance that Winders opens their eyes and replaces VISTA. They need to dump VISTA completely, offer XP as a replacement until such a time if ever Microsoft gets it's act together again. They forgot a good rule KEEP IT SIMPLE! XP was among their best systems made. VISTA is M.E. 2. There was no excuse for releasing it. Microsoft also needs to support XP indefinitely {at least 5 more years} as a gesture of goodwill and business integrity.
Why not keep XP and instead work on selling upgrades for programs a person might actually be willing to purchase?
Linux is the same way. No need for life support. Just flick the power switch, and it works as needed once booted.
I’m with you. I use Kubuntu. The only thing I use XP for is a game, now and then.
Buy a Mac.

I bought a Vaio with Vista for my wife for Christmas.
If I had it to do over again, I’m not sure if I would have done it. I’m hoping SP1 fixes some things, and that I’m able to tweak some things with my copy of Vista Annoyances from O’Reilly. The Annoyances series has been great, over the years.
I had problems with Ubuntu as well. I prefer PClinuxOS over ubuntu as a free live install distro.

Technet subscribers can already get it. I’m thinking about getting it from a friend, and seeing what it does to this laptop. I’ve considered backing off to XP, if it doesn’t clean a few things up.
I received a new HP laptop for Christmas and called HP about switching to XP as I really don't care for Vista. I was told it can be done but "your computer was designed to operate on Vista and if you change we may not be able to provide you with tech support or service." Clearly a implication of no support if you use XP.
1) You have a good video card, and
2) You have lots of RAM.
3) You can convince some idiot to trade you a licensed copy of XP Pro for it.

Try running huge Photoshop files on this hog OS.
2Gs of RAM ain’t squat.
I have to do my really complex stuff on an old Dell desktop with 4Gs if I want to get anywhere without crashing, big time.
Hubby [insanely] upgraded his Dell to Vista and has no problems at all.
Of course, he’s just surfing eBay, biker tech sites and answering business emails.
*I’m* the one who has to fight Vista to the death just to keep our website running.
Right now, I’m barely able to type because I’m transferring all of my MP3s to the aforementioned desktop to redo my iPods.
I don’t *dare* try to manage a 5000 song iTune folder on this bug-infested machine.
I WILL kill Vista soon.....no matter what I have to do to accomplish it.
[not to mention the unavoidable infestation of “IE 7”. if I *wanted* “tabbed browsing”, I’d use Firefox]
My suggestion:
Refuse the license agreement for the OS, get your refund, wipe the hard drive and install Linux.
