Catholic Group Hits McCain Endorsement

Republican presidential candidate John McCain has been accused by the Catholic League of embracing a “bigot” — Texas evangelical leader John Hagee.

McCain said on Wednesday that he was “very honored” to win the endorsement of pro-Israel Hagee, who heads a 19,000-member church in San Antonio.

Catholic League President Bill Donohue said in a statement: “There are plenty of staunch evangelical leaders who are pro-Israel, but are not anti-Catholic. John Hagee is not one of them.

“Indeed, for the past few decades he has waged an unrelenting war against the Catholic Church. For example, he likes calling it ‘The Great Whore,’ an ‘apostate church,’ the ‘anti-Christ,’ and a ‘false cult system…

“In Hagee’s latest book, ‘Jerusalem Countdown,’ he calls Hitler a Catholic who murdered Jews while the Catholic Church did nothing…

“For the record, Hitler persecuted the Catholic Church and was automatically excommunicated in 1931 — two years before he assumed power — when he acted as best man at Joseph Goebbels’ Protestant wedding…

“As for doing nothing about the Holocaust … Israeli diplomat Pinchas Lapide credited the Catholic Church with saving 860,000 Jews. No religion can match that.”

Hagee is best known for his writings on the Middle East, where he envisions a blood-soaked clash between East and West leading to the return of Jesus Christ.

Hagee has written that events in the Middle East point to an imminent apocalypse Christians should welcome.

McCain said that he was not familiar with Hagee's writings.

Donohue declared: “Senator Obama has repudiated the endorsement of Louis Farrakhan, another bigot. McCain should follow suit and retract his embrace of Hagee.”

Personally, I like Hagee. I know my Catholic friends here will disagree with me.

But let's get to the bigger political implications. What does McCain do in this situation? I would think you would want the Evangelical, and Catholic vote. If he throws Hagee under the bus, he is toast with MANY evangelicals. If he doesn't get Donohue to calm down, he's got a problem. Hagee also has the respect of many Jewish voters. If you were McCain, how whould you handle this?

I wonder what Hagee's freeper name is.

Tell those Catholics to CALM DOWN, GROW UP, read the RNC memo and send a mass apology to Barack Hussein Obama.

” If he doesn’t get Donohue to calm down, he’s got a problem.”

Really. This is just like Farrakan giving Obama an endorsement.

I suppose if some anti-evangelical, lefty, homosexual group who called Protestents sons of whores backed McCain, you’d be fine with that, eh?

John Hagee has made a career out of bashing Catholics. He is a typical televangelist whose sermons are full of condemnation, bombastic melodrama, and OVERSIZED EGO.

I totally agree with Mr. Donohue’s statement. John Hagee is a very divisive and combative public figure.

Don’t misunderstand me. Maybe that didn’t come out right. I am just curious how McCain deals with this.

It's the same thing as Bush meeting with the Bob Jones people.

I don't know any Catholic who was going to vote GOP in 2000, but then decided to vote Democrat because the nominee met with or was endorsed by an idiot.

It's more important to me that Hagee is pro-life, I don't care that he is too stupid to understand that he is only pro-life because the immemorial moral teaching of the Catholic Church properly informed his own tradition.

It really didn’t. What do you expect Catholics to feel and think?

Hagee is into Bible prophecy (end of world, Armageddon, etc.) that points to Mideast War and supportive of Israel.

This is what McCain needs to push his “national security”
agenda with evangelical-type voters.

Its good politically to get the endorsment over with early before the “real campaign” begins.

Conservatives and Chrsistians of the Hagee variety ride the back of the “Straight Talk Express” in this campaign as you can see from the Cunningham treatment for example.

Let me ask you this. What would you do if a secular jerk decided to call your religion “evil” and a “whore”? And then endorsed someone for president? If someone like that (*cough*Farrakan*cough*) endorsed Obama I bet you would make a big note of it.

My goodness, lookit the dustup when people started saying “Season’s Greetings” instead of “Merry Christmas”. Hagee is saying far, far worse. Does he get a pass because he’s a “Christian”? Some Christian, to spew such bile. We’ll calm down and shut up when he does.

Well said. Anti-Catholicism is tolerated by the GOP more than antisemitism.

LOL!

While Bill Donohue is one of those professionally offended people who could find hate speech in a dial tone, he does have a valid point about this Hagee character.

The local (San Antonio) news showed Hagee at the McCain USAA thing in San Antonio, then afterwards there was a Hagee thing for McCain. I wondered why Hagee was at USAA, (unless there is another really short fat guy who looks like Hagee).

I have heard John Hagee making anti-Catholic jokes on his Sunday radio service.
