Nearly three decades ago, Barack Obama stood out on the small campus of Occidental College in Los Angeles for his eloquence, intellect and activism against apartheid in South Africa. But Mr. Obama, then known as Barry, also joined in the party scene.
Years later in his 1995 memoir, he mentioned smoking reefer in the dorm room of some brother and talked about getting high. Before Occidental, he indulged in marijuana, alcohol and sometimes cocaine as a high school student in Hawaii, according to the book. He made some bad decisions as a teenager involving drugs and drinking, Senator Obama, now a presidential candidate, told high school students in New Hampshire last November.
Mr. Obamas admissions are rare for a politician (his book, Dreams From My Father, was written before he ran for office.) They briefly became a campaign issue in December when an adviser to Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Mr. Obamas chief Democratic rival, suggested that his history with drugs would make him vulnerable to Republican attacks if he became his partys nominee.

They’re getting it out now...
Hey, it was Occidental!
We are in for a rough ride.
C'mon Hill, perhaps he did not inhale just like your Slick Bill
WHO CARES.......I am NOT a OSAMA/BAMA supporter but I would rather someone get in office that has at least experimented with social drugs so that they have first hand knowledge of its effects and not what is pumped into the brains of those that tried them.
You know, if at some point we don’t get over recreational drug use and whether or not someone went to Vietnam being campaign issues, the political gene pool is going to be pretty empty.
As long as Obama is not a recovering addict with track marks in his arm, this really shouldn’t be an issue.
And Barry, having avoided the claws of the War On Some Drugs, will as President uphold those laws faithfully. Other people, not him, will be arrested and jailed. But not him, he was lucky.
He should be asked if dope harmed his mind in any way, and if he says no, then why is it illegal? It’s a question he can’t say “yes” to.
Wow, so he drank and experimented with drugs in school?!!?
How awful!!!!!
/s off
Actually I’m a little surprised this is a NYT article.
That’s Jack Kemp’s alma matar.
Nice job NY Times. Article is sourced and everything. Very flattering to Obama, as it throws the drug use charges out there, and then has quotes from several people about how articulate and hard working Obama is, and the drug use was very rare and insignificant.
Exact opposite approach as the recent hit piece on McCain, and another prime example of the political editorializing which masquerades as “news” in the NY Times.
Clearly, Obama is the man they favor, and will publish “news” that casts him in the most flattering way.
Youthful experimentation isn’t the issue. Both O’Bama and Clintoon are bigger threats to the American way of life due to their current beliefs.
If it was a Pub it would disqualify him from office. Remember the flap about Bush and drugs.
At least he doesn't think Americans are complete idiots by claiming that he didn't inhale.
“If it was a Pub it would disqualify him from office. Remember the flap about Bush and drugs.”
Which is exactly why we shouldn’t lower ourselves to their “standards.”
“At least he doesn’t think Americans are complete idiots by claiming that he didn’t inhale.”
Dennis Miller had a great line about way back when Clinton was first elected...he said, “Do we really want President who PASSED on the bong?”
;)
“If a person whos trying to join the military admits using any narcotic above marijuana he/she is automatically disqualified from service, should this be the same standard for the CIC?”
Well presumably those joining the military are a lot younger, where drug experimentation was probably a lot more recent. I’m not sure your comparison works.
I won’t matter. The people think they are getting another Bill minus the scandals.
