McCain Slams Swiftboat Vets

Wed, Feb 27, 2008 at 1:19:32 pm PST

Has anyone ever really shown that the allegations made by the Swift Boat Veterans against John F. Kerry were false? If someone has refuted the charges conclusively, I’ve never seen it—which makes John McCain’s continuing antipathy toward the Swiftboaters inexplicable: McCain Scrambles to Control Backers.

Speaking to reporters aboard his campaign tour bus late Tuesday, McCain acknowledged that conservative independent groups pursuing a similar line to Cunningham’s could be impossible to control.

“I think you have to worry about that, particularly the 527s,” McCain said, referring to the independent advocacy groups that are not subject to contributor limits.

“We’re aware of many of the things that 527s have done ... where unlimited amounts of money can pour into negative campaigns such as we saw against John Kerry and his combat record, as we saw against (former Georgia Sen.) Max Cleland ... they’re really very not accountable to anyone. At least I have to say ‘I’m John McCain and I approve this message.’”

And no, I’m not saying ‘down with McCain’ here. But in this case, I think he’s scoring some cheap political points at the expense of people who don’t deserve the bad rap.

"McCain was dogged for years by charlatans like Ted Sampley. I don’t think he sees the difference between Sampley and the Swift Boat Veterans. The Swifties were men of honor. Samplay was not."

REALLY? What do you know about Ted Sampley? I would STRONGLY suggest that you and others, who are quick to acuse and know not of what they say, do a little due dillegence, friend.

Check out the following narative of this very decorated Vietnam Veteran (Hero in my humble opinion)

There is only one explanation -- McCain is afraid of being "swiftboated". He is afraid of truthful allegations coming out against him and he wants to be able to use the "they are swiftboating me" defense.

You only get to use that fallacious defense ( bare assertion that charges have no merit because they are being made ) if you can demonstrate that you were from the beginning and still remain to this day convinced that John O'Neill was lying.

McCain has got to be a bit worried though that perhaps the media will not play dumb on his behalf like they did for Kerry.

Southhack, the problem is that not that McCain wants to run a clean campaign.

The problem is that taking that view labels what the Swift Boat Vets did as “dirty”.

It was nothing of the sort.

I think it is more likely that labeling “truth” as “insults” is more likely the path to liberalism.

Every single time I think that I can hold my nose and vote for McCain while finding it in me to disregard the abomination of McCain-Feingold, he opens his damned stupid mouth and reminds me he SIDES WITH KERRY!

I’ve gotta admit, I’m getting weak in the knees... I’ve always been pragmatic, and wanted the GOP to win, but I’m almost at a tipping point- where I just don’t care anymore, and would prefer Obama or Hillary to McCain... McCain is DESPICABLE!!! The 2 527 examples he cites are attacks on Dems??? What about the lib 527s, which blasted the GOP and Bush constantly? What about M.Moore and his movies??? The libs outspent the GOP 527s 20-w
1 !!! I’m almost off the bus, and if he can’t get my vote-— and I HATE the lying dems...or folks like me... He’s finished...

I contributed as a veteran to the Swift Boat group. I would not condone reviving the group for this election. It serves no purpose at all. McCain does not want to deal with the issue. I agree.

Go vote for all the other races - don’t pass up an opportunity to get downticket conservatives, if any, elected.

Has McCain EVER publicly criticized Soros? Ted Kennedy?

I'll answer your rhetorical question with another: Is he saying anything that is NOT designed to lose the election?

McCain is like other moderate Republicans who are kinder and friendlier with their enemies than they are with the true base. McCain isn’t stupid. It’s just that he is philosophically closer to the Democrats.

Right on point, this coupled with the dissing of Cunningham, is a clear "F U" to Conservatives.

Here is a real political truth, guys.

There has never been a republican candidate who won the election without winning Ohio. McCain needs to win Ohio, just like the rest of them.

While the conservative vote is spread around Ohio, it is a fact that the huge republican numbers are in southwest Ohio. There has NEVER been a republican winner in Ohio who did not win SouthWestern Ohio. Never. This, too, is simply a matter of record.

McCain just insulted one of the most popular conservatives in all of southern Ohio and threw him under the bus. Additonally, he insulted a guy who also happens to be a conservative talk show host. It IS having repercussions, and I heard talk show host Bill Cunningham demand that McCain apologize to him, because he has now lost Cunningham’s support.

Cunningham is on daily on WLW, one of the largest signal stations in all of America, and I listen to it every single day of the week. He is on weekdays, evenings, and has a regular Clear Channel nationwide show on Sunday evenings. He’s used as a spokesperson in more commercials than I can even begin to remember. He’s a regular guest on all our sports talk programs. He’s all over our TV.

In short, McCain just threw away Southern Ohio. If he loses SW Ohio, then he loses Ohio. If he loses Ohio, then he loses America.

That is reality, and it’s not just some wired Freeper talking through his tin-foil hat.

Conservatives need to come up with a Plan B real fast. At this point, I’d even support Ron Paul over this poser.

Yes, and everyone knows McCain would never lie about an opponent. Just ask Mitt.

McCain continues to spit in conservatives’ faces while expecting our vote. Good luck.

Yeah, this whole episode has an ominous portend for Captain McCain and is a completely asinine way for him to come out of the gate for the general election.

Its going to be a long eight months.

Well, let me offer my hand of thanks to you for your service. My father was the same - 3 1/2 years in the Navy as an Aviation mechanic - and never discussed his real service. (he also had some issues of delusions of grandeur, but that is a story for another day)

I told him one day that, whatever he did while he was in, I was proud of, for him standing up and being counted.

I think that was his best day, and he never forgot it.

When the polls open on Tuesday morning, I will NOT be voting for John McCain.

I’ll probably vote for someone else on the ballot, just to register McCain opposition strength. After that, I’m still toying with becoming an independent or a CP member. (I just sent them an email detailing my disagreement with their Defense Plank of their platform. Let’s see if they respond.)

John Kerry LIED about his combat service at least where he was and when.

McCain’s attempt to perpetuate the alternative reality that Kerry, the media and the RATS foist on the public is disgusting.

I am a proud contributor and supporter of the Swiftboat Veterans for Truth.

McCains’s the best we got. And that ain’t sayin’ much.

I don't see how both parties could have come up with four worse choices had they deliberately tried to do so.

“I’m almost at a tipping point- where I just don’t care anymore,”

So am I.
It looks more and more likely that I will never live in the US again. I was born in Memphis in 1944, grew up and spent all of my life in west Tennessee. I have been conservative Republican all of my life and missed voting for Goldwater by only one year. In my high school days, I campaigned for Nixon against Kennedy. I never voted for a democrat in my life.

Now I see Americans dumbed down to the lowest level ever, and America self destructing.
I can now be happy in CENTRAL Europe,(not west), or parts of Asia for less then $1000 per month.
Why should I even think of returning to the USA?
I have thought of voting absentee for McStain but I just don’t see the point in going to the trouble.
The man just chaps my ass.
