The U.S. Mint has rejected three designs for a commemorative District of Columbia quarter because they include the slogan "Taxation Without Representation."
The Mint said Wednesday the slogan is too controversial. D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty says it's a fair assessment.

Wow, every now and then the gubmint makes a good decision.
Why donât you damn DCâers petition the state of Maryland?? If you want to vote as a state then it must be with Maryland.... otherwise STFU:-)
Well, the slogan maybe doesn’t have to be on a quarter, but they do have a point. I think the two big yet-uncorrected blunders the founding fathers made were 1) the failure to figure out a way for the people of DC to have representation (it flies in the face of the idea of a republic) and 2) conflating the head of state with the head of government.
Like DC residents pay taxes instead of getting the UNearned income tax credit.
The DC quarter ought to feature Marion Barry smoking crack with the title “The Bitch Set Me Up” underneath.
Rejoining Maryland would also give DC a voting congress critter. The main reason DC doesn't want to is because they would be worth two fewer electoral votes.
“Taxation Without Representation.”
That was my motto for many years when I commuted to New York to work.
I think that the reason for #1 is that at the time of the founding, the District was a rather dismal place, and never intended to be a place with a large permanent population.
Remember that back then the federal government was intended to be small and weak, and not the giant all-powerful monolith is is today.
Good. Our money should not be making partisan political statements.
I think they should put the motto “The bitch set me up” on the quarter to capture the true spirit of the district.
If the SCOTUS comes up with the “correct” decision, maybe they can have a quarter with a gun on it. Wouldn’t that be funny!
DC is NOT A STATE! It is a federal district where the Capitol is. God what is wrong with these morons! They want to be called something they are not!
You don’t like it? DON’T LIVE IN DC!!!!! Man, enough people commute into the place every day - they figured it out!
"Your Tax Dollars At Play"
"We Get $1,000 In Spending For Every Dollar of Tax"
"Murder Capitol, USA"
"Home of the Redskins Senators Wizards Capitols Nationals"
"Making Newark, New Jersey Look Good Since 1823"
I believe the intent of the founding fathers was to not have a ton of people living in the federal district of columbia in the first place. I think this was the main reason why, combined with the fact they also realized that the head of the federal government was not a sovereign individual state. They understood the differences between a sovereign state and a federal district. The federal govt derives its limited powers from the individual sovereign states.
That or “Gun Free Heaven/Safest Place on Earth”.
The intent was to put the goverment outside of ALL states. Otherwise, the state with the federal government would have an advantage over the others.
Now that they gave the vote to the district, they basically created a new state THAT HAS THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IN IT. Exactly what the founding fathers were trying to prevent.
The correct thing to do should’ve been to make the district a federal tax free zone, with no voting privileges. Then give all residents the option of declaring a state to be an honorary resident of. THen they would vote as a resident of THAT state and pay federal taxes as a resident of THAT state.
Beat ya to the punch. ;-D
Can DC be annexed/admitted into a state without a constitutional amendment?
The Taxation without Representation issue in DC is factually correct - they have no vote in congress.
