“When asked if he had “referred to Jesse Jackson as an ignoramus,” Buckley said, “If I didn’t, I should have.”

LOL!

I like this thread. It's shaping up to be the online WFB wake.

When he ran for Mayor, in 1965, he was a riot. When Lindsay [and nobody could load up the syllables in “John VLIET Lindsay” like WFB] came up with the slogan “He [Lindsay] is fresh, and everyone else is tired”, Buckley ran with it: [Abe] Beame “is short, and everyone else is tall”, and on and on.

One of his position papers called for building a raised bicycle path: “The Buckley Bike way. My finest moment”. The book he wrote about that campaign “The Unmaking of A Mayor” was the funniest political reminiscence I ever read.

I wish I was witty like that.

Kudos to Ann—the esteemed Mr. Buckley was found dead this morning, and she cranked out this column by this dinnertime.

That was a great line. It reminds me of the time when FNC one Sunday a few years back had Jesses Jackson on along with Charles Krauthammer and a retired general - forget the name now. Both made mincement of Jackson. The general did so in a way that senior officers do with military slackers and Charles with his wit and style.
