Was Weicker a conservative in 1964? He just learned how liberal CT is and what it takes to survive there.

Not at all. He was always a liberal, Connecticut at the time was not particularly liberal (went for Ford in '76, Reagan in '80). The governor, Thomas Meskill was no liberal; and Democrat Ella Grasso would be a big improvement over present RINO Gov. Jody Rell if Grasso were still alive.

Weicker "survived" with his maverick label and friendship with big/old money in Fairfield County. Lieberman beat him, not as a liberal, but mainly by pointing out that Weicker missed a bunch of votes and wasn't doing his job.

The Connecticut of 1964 is gone, and people like me left after it changed. Connecticut lost population during Weickers one term.

I was under the impression that Weicker was a Goldwaterite in 1964 but moved sharply to the left with Watergate.
