If you’re going to go out of your way to embarrass a supporter, you better have a darn good reason for it. I don’t see it here. Cunningham’s “gaffe” is innocuous, and McCain is doing the other side’s dirty work for them by declaring the use of Obama’s real middle name offensive. Let Obama look silly and petulant objecting to it.

RINOs like McCain love to be patted on the head by liberals. George Bush is the same way. These guys have no trouble denouncing members of their own party who are to the right of them. They don't hesitate to use terms such as "racist" (amnesty) or "sexist" (the Miers debacle) to marginalize fellow Republicans. They'll proudly blast supporters who play a little rough. But they're perfectly submissive when dealing with the Democrats to their left. Ted Kennedy can call Bush every vile name in the book and Bush will still give him awards and call him a great American. McCain's trying to get the New York Times to praise him again just days after they openly attacked him.
