Dmitri Medvedev, the Russian first deputy prime minister and the presumptive successor to President Vladimir Putin, committed the Kremlin on Monday to long-term support in backing Serbia against an independent Kosovo.
Medvedev appeared in Belgrade, the Serbian capital, with Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica of Serbia. It was his first significant foreign policy appearance since he became the front-runner for Russia's highest office, and he restated Putin's position and made it clear that it would be his own.
"We proceed from the understanding that Serbia is a single state with its jurisdiction spanning its entire territory, and we will stick to this principled stance in the future," he said, in remarks reported widely on news broadcasts in Russia.
"Serbia," he added, faces "conditions of illegitimate actions to unilaterally recognize Kosovo."
The United States reacted quickly to Medvedev's statements and restated its own support for Kosovo. It made clear that, in Washington's view, Kosovo's break from Serbia was final. Today in Europe Russia assures Serbia of its support on Kosovo Can NATO take a tough line when Putin shows up at its summit? Politicians suddenly focusing on Spain's declining economy
"We are going to continue to try to work with both the Russians and the Serbs on this, but I think that it ought to be clear to everybody at this point that Kosovo is never going to be a part of Serbia again," Tom Casey, a State Department spokesman, told reporters, according to The Associated Press

A replay of "The Guns of August"?
Chechen muslims + Kosovo, Russians + Serbs = proxy war.
The loss of some allies and we get to be shown as willing to accept dhimmi status.
That’s about the only things I see.
did they rebuild the maginot line ?
I don’t know. It’s an utterly perplexing position to take.
Putin was always serbia’s ally.
We get a second independent Muslim state in Europe - dedicated, of course, to the religion of peace (trade mark pending.)
Through WWII the Serbs were friendly to the US, too, up until clinton led the US into an illegal and immoral war against them. Now this.
If Serbia loses Kosovo under this logic, then Russia loses Chechnya.
That was the Second World War. Incidentally, in the First World War, the Austrians pushed Serbia out of their country into Greece, where they stayed for several years until the tide of war tipped against Austria.
And the United States loses Aztlan.

The USA has spoken.
Nicholas II assured Serbia of his support in 1914. Four years later, Nicholas, and his wife and children, were murdered in a basement by Bolsheviks. Now Putin, a “former” Bolshevik, is assuring Serbia of his support.
england loses scotland.
spain loses the basques
cyprus loses its northern part of the island
Greece loses its northwest near turkey.
Canada is just sliced up to itty bitty parts.
stupid is as stupid does.
just more proof the state department answers to no administration. It is self ruling unelected desk jockeys.
As their invited guest, NATO gets to ask Putin about Iran at their meeting in Bucharest on April 2-4. Putin has invited President Bush to join him at Sochi on the Black Sea after the meeting for further talks.
Just who is running our foreign policy? We shove Kosovo in Putin's face then ask for his help on Iran?
