Castro a hero of our times

Published Monday February 25th, 2008 Appeared on page C7

In the Second World War, we soon learned our world was against the kill-to-win policy of the enemies we challenged.

I was part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, a major player in winning the air war.

In 1945, that world spirit against the killing policy created the United Nations with its goal to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war.

Perhaps that is why I see Castro as a hero of our times. Here is a leader of a UN nation who has an enviable record of public service.

It makes one wonder why President George W. Bush has decided to continue U.S. sanctions against Cuba. Perhaps he is afraid his people will be exposed to the results of a people-friendly public policy.

Few leaders since 1945 have successfully defended their nation against a superpower for 50 years. Cuba did.

Few nations have given its people free health and education at all levels. Cuba did.

Few nations operate without food banks and homeless people shelters. Cuba did.

To me, Castro led Cuba for 48 years with a public commitment seen in Canada when Tommy Douglas gave us Medicare and Louis Robichaud gave New Brunswick people equal opportunity.

I think Castro should be given a retirement party by we, the people, of the United Nations.

For 48 years he served his people and won their loyalty.

As a United Nations person and Canadian citizen in 2008, I say thank you Castro for giving succeeding generations hope.

I suggest we choose governments, non-violently by vote, which put people first -- as Castor did so effectively for almost half a century.

As members of the UN, we are human beings first. That was the gift of those who served in the Second World War, and that is why UN peacekeepers were so successful -- they served the people of this world.

No homeless shelters or food banks?

WOW!

Could that because when all sustenance and shelter is controlled and issued by the government, therefore if they don’t like you anymore they take back their house and their food and put you into a Communist ‘homeless shelter’. They call it a prison. How stupid.

I suppose it would crumble his Communist idealism if I told him that Black Cubans are worse off under Communism than in any Capitalist system. They are a hefty % of the population but make up a minuscule amount of the ‘professionals’ and ‘leaders’ or even ‘tourism industry job’, and this is what is mandated from on high - just another example of the man keeping the brother down.

I find it very interesting how Castro apologists blame the US embargo. It was Castro that blamed US business in Cuba for Cuba’s problems when he came to power. Now they blame Cuba’s problems on the lack of US business with Cuba. How interesting. The real embargo in Cuba is the Castro embargo he imposes on his own people. Where is the blockade? http://www.therealcuba.com/whereistheblockade.htm

Mr. R.H. Young of Fredericton obviously has no clue of the fact that being caught in Cuba with a copy of the 1948 United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights can get you arrested, a fact that even NPR acknowledges.

This must be a joke. Cubans trying to escape Cuba are simply machine gunned on the water if they are caught. Cuba is almost pre-industrial and most construction is carried out by gang labor. You want a golf course? They build them using gangs of people with rakes and shovels.

Canadians love to vacation in Cuba because it is CHEAP by comparison to other Carribean countries. Fat Canadians go there, lap up lavish meals, live like western royalty and spend more on a week there than the average Cuban can expect to make in a year, or a lifetime. A Cuban Bank Manager, for instance, earns less than $100 per month.

Further, all foreign currencies must be exchanged for Cuban money upon entry. No bank in North America will re-exchange the Cuban bucks for US, or any other currency. It is a crime for Cubans to possess foreign currency: they get monopoly money so they can’t actually use it to build a new life elsewhere. The Castro regime takes and uses all foreign currency for its own ends.

Cubans are prisoners and slaves, thanks to Castro the Monster. Canadians have helped him greatly. IMHO R.H. Young of Fredericton is a sick fool, or joking.

The Cuban Memorial displayed at Tamiami Park, Miami, Florida: Each cross bears the name of a victim of Castro's genocide against the Cuban people.

"It's totally cool if the g-men beat you for not loving the government enough, as long as they pick up the tab when you visit the doctor."

This sounds stupid to everyone else, right?
