While I don't disagree with you, I think the fact that Obama did this clothing change is not a good sign even in the general election.
Like it or not, what our Presidents, and Presidential candidates, wear is significant. Remember Dukakis looking nerdy in the military helmet? Kerry looking like a rabbit in the NASA blue bunny suit?
Even the positive images are carefully stage-managed. Kennedy sailing; Bush Jr in a cowboy hat; Bush Sr at Kennebunkport; Reagan clearing brush. They all matter deeply.
If Obama has to manage an image crisis because he wore traditional African garb, so be it. He would need to prove to Americans that, as a black man, he will not orient American policy toward Africa. He will need to prove that he can lead white Americans, not just blacks. He will need to prove that he will treat all races fairly.
