Woman, 23, likely to be charged in Cottonwood bus crash today

MARSHALL, MINN. - The 23-year-old woman whose van collided with a school bus was arrested Thursday afternoon and booked on suspicion of criminal vehicular operation in connection with the crash that killed four children near Cottonwood, Minn.

Alianiss Morales, of Minneota, Minn., is expected to be charged and make her first court appearance this morning, said Lyon County Attorney Rick Maes.

The Minnesota State Patrol's investigation of the crash continued Thursday, and Maes said much of the paperwork from the investigation was already on his desk.

"One [part of the investigation] is whether she was operating the vehicle in a grossly negligent manner," Maes said.

"So we need to look at what exactly witnesses identified at that particular intersection."

Maes would not elaborate on Morales' actions that led to the arrest, and declined to say whether she was speeding. Other charges are possible, but it is unlikely that other drivers involved will be charged, Maes said.

The driver of the pickup truck involved in the crash said that the van driven by Morales hit the side of the school bus at the intersection of Minnesota Hwy. 23 and County Road 24 near Cottonwood on Tuesday afternoon.

The bus skidded on its side into the pickup truck driven by James Hancock, 47, of Marshall, who is hospitalized with a broken leg, a broken hand and other injuries.

The children who died were Jesse Javens, 13, and Hunter Javens, 9, both of Cottonwood; Reed Stevens, 12, of Marshall; and Emilee Olson, 9, of Cottonwood. They were among 28 students on the bus. In addition to Hancock, eight children remained hospitalized in Sioux Falls, S.D., Marshall and Rochester.

Reactions to Morales' arrest were mixed at a prayer service Thursday.

I think that this type of lawsuit, along with border protection, would go a LONG way in reducing the flow of illegals....

While we're on the subject of lawyers, illegals, and meat....

Aliases trip up slaughterhouse case suspect

Had to dig to find it. The guy's status is buried near the end of the article.

Great - the Chinese send us their tainted toys and the illegals make our meat tainted.

Employers who knowing hire illegals who then kill Americans should be charged with felony murder.

No provision for that in the law, but the RICO Act allows for Citizen Recourse if they've been damaged by an employer who knowingly hires illegals.

Sounds like this one would be tailor made for an enterprising plaintiffs attorney to strip Jenny-O to the bone.

>>From a one-time homeschooling Mom to another: that ping is kind of sick<<

From a homeschooling mom to one who is not, those of us who got the ping are pretty happy about it. I wouldn’t have known too much about this case had I not gotten the pings.

If you spend your life being offended about things that don’t involve you, you’ll be miserable.

Approximately 17,000 children are admitted to hospital emergency room due to school bus injuries.

That's because liability demands they take all 40 kids on the bus to the ER if any of them are so much as shaken up.

The national agency that keeps track of school bus safety claims that buses are safer than cars. However, when I checked their website, they compared school bus stats to all children in cars during those hours for what ever reason. This would include teens driving other teens. They did not compare parents or guardians driving to and from school with children securely fastened in seat belts.

Roughly 200 times as many children are killed in car accidents as die in bus accidents during school hours, which is all the more impressive when you consider that well over half of children are bussed and don't have an oppurtunity to participate in the car death statistic. Yes teens are dangerous drivers, but they aren't carrying the whole load themselves.

The bus death epidemic is a creation of the sensationalist press.

I’m not sure about the victims. Congressman Steve King of Iowa has run the numbers and has compiled stats on the criminality of illegal aliens. About half of the people killed by them are victims of drunk or incompetent, unlicensed drivers. Those victims aren’t Latin gangbangers, they’re innocent people, even children. The other half are murder victims. I have no idea whether many of them are Latino gang members or anything of that nature. I suspect most of them are law abiding Americans of a variety of different races and ethnicities. The victims range from the well-to-do white author who was murdered in New York to the black youths who were murdered a few months back in Newark.

“As a former bus driver, I have always wondered (and pestered the higher ups) about WHY AREN’T THERE SEATBELTS ON BUSES!? I never ever received a satisfactory answer.”

they don’t want to pay for them, and don’t think they could get kids to use them if they did. Drivers aren’t supposed to discipline kids so how do you force them to use them?

I musta been a scary dude, because I could get those kids to sit down, be quiet. I think they would’ve put on a seatbelt for me. If not, I would’ve posted pictures of accident victims...hehehe...

The only stat that should matter to a parent is how many children are injured in a parent’s car with the parent or guardian driving a child ( in a properly fastened seat belt) to a from school.

I have never seen that statistic. I doubt that it is available because if it were it would make school buses look as bad as they really are.

Where are you going to get drivers who can enforce the rules about wearing the seatbelt? Punks today tell their teachers to f off, the would probably stomp on the bus driver.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Stomp on the bus driver? Tell him to F off!

Wow! This is **definitely** another reason to homeschool!

Please read #92 and #69.

These are definitely reasons to homeschool. Is this the wonderful “socialization” that homeschoolers are missing?

Imagine that! Taking razor blades to seat belts? Have you ever in your life heard of a homeschooler doing that? Would any rational parent want their child sitting next to another student using a razor blade to slice apart a seat belt? Not me thanks!

Thanks to metmom, I am notified of school issues. The name of her ping just happens to be Another Reason to Homeschool. I am very grateful for her pings, because without them I would miss many important school articles.

It is mere coincidence that the name of metmom’s ping list is “Another Reason to Homeschool”, and you umbrage is misplaced in this instance.

Nice! Hijack a thread about the damage illegal criminals are doing to this country to push your agenda.

Four children are dead due to actions of an illegal alien. Your sanctimony is incredible. Please do not bother to reply to me as I am focusing on the issue at hand - illegal immigration.

If these illegal aliens drive like the people in Costa Rica, I am not at all surprised!

Four children are killed in a school bus, and every one of my posts is about school bus safety.

Where’s the hijack?

Boy, are you cranky!!

I’m one of those posters who is glad that metmom pinged us for an update. It is a courtesy. You know, like in manners. If you wish to continue pretending that somehow it is disrespectful of people to follow what happens to the murderous woman that killed 4 children, that reflects on you, not metmom.
