Huckabee's wife takes a breather at a Vegas fight, rests at Hooters
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 2/21/8 | Carla Marinucci

What happens in Vegas doesn't always stay in Vegas - especially if you're the wife of a presidential candidate. Just ask Janet Huckabee, who attended a middleweight prize fight this past weekend in Las Vegas - where she stayed at the Hooters Casino Hotel.

That eye-opening combination - a title bout in Sin City, which celebrates gambling, drinking and all things wild, along with a hospitality chain favoring buxom waitresses in low-cut garb - could potentially shock the armies of evangelical conservative Christians who have made her husband, the former governor of Arkansas, the only remaining GOP opponent to party front-runner John McCain.

But Janet Huckabee, whose husband is also a former Baptist minister, said in a telephone interview Wednesday that her recent brief excursion to root for boxer Jermain Taylor, a longtime friend and fellow Arkansan - and her stay at a hotel that she said wasn't exactly her first choice - was supposed to be a rare respite from the often-brutal presidential campaign trail.

"It's a grueling schedule. ... I had been in Wisconsin and flew to Michigan, and Friday and Saturday I spoke 14 times before the fight," said Janet Huckabee, who called a Chronicle reporter while traveling with her husband in Dallas in response to questions about the trip. "There's little time for anything other than campaigning."

She has made no secret of the family's support for Taylor, the middleweight boxing champ known as the "pride of Arkansas," who had a title bout against Kelly Pavlik in Vegas over the weekend.

But she said she never planned on staying at Hooters for the hot-ticket fight, which also drew such celebrities as Jack Nicholson, Michael Jordan, Eddie Murphy and Sylvester Stallone.

Maybe the woman likes prize fighting? Both my parents did and attended bouts as well. Just becuase you don’t understand why she wanted to do it doesn’t mean it is weird.

Evangelicals aren’t supposed to go to Hooters?

No. They are just not supposed to recognize each other when they are there. Kind of like don't ask, don't tell. ;~))

oh come on now.....its your right to go anywhere you please but don't start this "family" atmosphere crap....watch their commercials and tell me honestly they aren't pandering to the lowest common denominator....

I always say though...if women would refuse to be treated as if their feelings weren't important, then "families" would not be going to Hooters, let alone the husbands and "fathers"...

this Hooters business just shows me how superficial "conservative" and "Christian" people are ....what did Jesus say about "lusting" in your heart?....

You are probably right. My point is, they could have made any Vegas hotel she stayed at into a scandal. This should be a reminder to all Christians everywhere to avoid even the appearance of evil. I say that fully believing she did nothing wrong. But maybe it would have been wise to anticipate the spin anyway.

I don’t mean that Christians should never stay in Vegas. Given the fact that many conventions are held there, it is hard to avoid even if you want to. My point in saying it is wise to avoid the appearance of evil is just that this reaction could have been anticipated. It wasn’t a necessary activity, even though again, she did nothing wrong. I just think she should learn from this experience and avoid these sorts of situations, at least while her husband is campaigning.

I thought the Huckabees were out of work and needed money.

How did she afford expensive prize fight tickets?

My point is, they could have made any Vegas hotel she stayed at into a scandal.

Seems to me it would a lot more difficult to make a scandal out of staying at the Flamingo, the Paris, or the MGM. There's nothing intrinsically immoral about moderate gambling, watching a boxing match, or staying at a hotel that features both.

Hooters is a different story. Look at the name, for crying out loud.

Not that I really care what Mrs. Huckabee does. I just find it rather amusing that she would be so dumb as to not realize that staying at Hooters would make her look a tad hypocritical.

This is just silliness. I would take my mom to Hooters. Big deal.

I don’t care where she stayed either, I just can’t stand boxing. Well, wait, if I could witness a high profile democrat against a Marine, or the Marine’s Mom, that I might like to see.... that or any member of the Berkeley City Council in the ring. Ok, that changed my mind, I might actually like boxing.

This shocks the conscience. A prize fight and hot wings afterwords. Sin, sin! These San Fran reporters are writing for the ignorant, parochial bigots that make up most of the big city left.

As a person who schedules hotel stays with some frequency, what happens is the scheduler pulls up a list of hotels usually by price or distance from the event. My guess is that this was scheduled for her based on that sort of criteria: the cheapest place that is close. It is also highly possible that the boxer’s friend/family scheduled the hotel for her. To tag her with doing something wrong because of this is to place an “I have an agenda” sign in neon lights over your own head. Still, she can learn from this.

That’s the most horrible altered photo of Janet Huckabee. In person, she actually does look human.

Are you under the impression that a boxing matches, hamburgers, staying in hotels, and young waitress in a t-shirts are considered sinful by Christians? Does sin seep like osmosis through the sheets (and if so, must Christians only sleep in hotels that bar unmarried couples from renting rooms?). Should Christians not go to the beach because of bikinis? (gasp!)

The writers of this article seem to think this is hypocritical . . . but they’re in San Francisco and so are a bit removed from things having to do with Americans or God. Do you still think it is hypocritical?
