You can’t tell someone’s ancestry strictly by appearance. Often, and maybe even most of the time, but not reliably. Many former slaves deemed black in the South because of the “one drop” rule were able to migrate and integrate into white society in the North.

there was a notorious and horrible murder many years ago of a red headed "white" child by the child's white father.....her mother who had deceased was black....

the girl would never have been considered half black by skin color or by hair color, but some of her facial features were telling.....

its not about skin color.....race is a deeper than that......
