For McCain, Self-Confidence on Ethics Poses Its Own Risk [McCain had an affair?]

Early in Senator John McCain’s first run for the White House eight years ago, waves of anxiety swept through his small circle of advisers.

A female lobbyist had been turning up with him at fund-raisers, in his offices and aboard a client’s corporate jet. Convinced the relationship had become romantic, some of his top advisers intervened to protect the candidate from himself — instructing staff members to block the woman’s access, privately warning her away and repeatedly confronting him, several people involved in the campaign said on the condition of anonymity.

When news organizations reported that Mr. McCain had written letters to government regulators on behalf of the lobbyist’s clients, the former campaign associates said, some aides feared for a time that attention would fall on her involvement.

Mr. McCain, 71, and the lobbyist, Vicki Iseman, 40, both say they never had a romantic relationship.

Pretty empty allegations, but the point is innuendo. Doesn't change my opinion of McCain one iota (disliked him before, dislike him no more or less now).

Another angle to consider here is that this story will be used as a lead-in to rehash McCain's real affair while they have everyone's attention. The truth is bad enough - McCain was still married and living with his first wife in 1979 while bumping uglies with a then 25-year-old Cindy. McCain later divorced his first wife (who had remained faithful and raised their three children while he was imprisoned in Vietnam), married Cindy, and then launched his political career. This got a little play in 2000 during the Republican primaries, but not much. I doubt his affair will become a persistent theme this time, but it could happen.

If the NYT really wanted to destroy McCain they would have saved this for October. Now there is plenty of time to refute it.”

I'm sure there is plenty more for saved October. The NYT just waited until Romney, a moral man and a terrific executive, was safely out of the way.

I agree. If this is all they’ve got, this is not a big deal. Sure made Keith Olbermann hyperventilate, though. (What a surprise!)

FWIW, I don't think so. GOP can still nominate someone else...

Rudy and Mitt were given the most time early in the debates because as you may recall, they were the front runners, and no one else was even close.

McCain is actually the first choice of the MSM. The MSM also pushed Huckabee to the top. McCain and Obama were hand chosen by George Soros. The real question is why do you want to allow Soros to pick the next president?

Olberman? Consider the source.

Would I be surprised? No. Does it matter in 2008's election? No.

William Jefferson Clinton pretty much immunized politicians from this sort of stuff.

Only DemonRats. Republicans are still fair game if they think with the wrong head.

I was thinking along the same lines. They can’t go after Obama unless it looks like they go after “everybody” (well, almost).

Thought so.

And the best headline so far of the night:

“Clinton the real loser in McCain Lobbyist Scandal”

Just gotta laugh. It’s always about the Clintons!

The NYTimes strikes again. They help pick a candidate in the primary, and now they get to destroy him. Motherf***ers.
