Kay Bailey ... Not. Does nothing for the ticket nationally or even in the South truthfully.
Romney could balance the ticket and bring votes nationally.
JC Watts, an idea I could live with. He could bring in more votes nationally than the Governors (Pawlenty an the one from S.C.) I have heard mentioned.
Thompson would not help the ticket. VP should be younger than the top spot. Much younger. Besides the fire is not him him.
Several Senators come to mind (Inhofe, Coburn or Sessions) but I seriously doubt that they would leave Congress. I can not think of a House member at the moment, even Hunter I don't believe has the nationwide recognition, that could balance the ticket as well as draw votes nationally.
General overall acceptance nationwide is the key for the Veep slot and balancing the ticket. Hopefully someone whose views tend to be somewhat more consistently conservative on fiscal and national security matters; as a enhancement to McCain and the ticket nationally.
Getting more in Congress, instead of losing seats, now would also be a help to reduce the gap between GOP and Dems. A strong Veep could help do that too when voters look at the overall ticket.

SHE KILLED THE FENCE ACT FUNDING ALMOST SUNGLEHANDEDLY!!
John Boehner?? HA!! That’s the first I’ve heard of him being a VP. The ultimate “insider”—the House Minority Speaker...
No, but some of my colleagues have it—McAmnesty needs a rock-ribbed conservative, NOT “Mr. Touchback” Pence or any other wussie on the Invasion—McLame’s biggest negative. He needs a Tancredo-type, but Hunter ain’t it because he couldn’t help McNasty in CA one hoot. Thompson’s had it. Suckabee’s not going to help McQueeg in the Northern states.
The ONLY logical choice for McCain is to ask Romney to be his VP. But if McCain wanted to run for re-election, THAT would be a problem for Romney which is why he might not accept the offer. Hard to say.

“McCain needs to pick a southern conservative to carry that demographic.”
why?????
if not, he’d lose that demographic to obama or hillary????
i don’t think so
did i want mcpain, or just as importantly did a big chunk of that ‘demographic’ want mcpain??? no
but i and they want obama/billary a lot less
mcpain’s vp choice will not change how much we will not vote for obama/billary
vp’s are chosen for the gen elec, not the primaries
our conservative hedge against mcpain’s populist liberal antics is not to throw him under the bus, no matter who is his vp, but to get working to elect the loyal conservative opposition in congress to mcpain/obama/billary

Romney would not be a good pick. McCain really needs a Conservative on the ticket with him... a proven one.

Where do these foolish suggestions come from?
Same people acknowledge that McCain has alienated the GOP base — then suggest he should reach LEFT for his VP (Rice, Hutchison, etc.).
Do they teach CLASSES in being that dim?

If McCain chooses Kay, that may be how we get our first female President. Succession due to death in office.

If (when) Obama gets the nomination, McCain will probably pick a different female with political views more like his own.

"Vice President Kay Bailey Hutchison" Too old! A much younger person from the genuine conservative wing of the party needs to be chosen to unify the party.

i think mcpain will pick someone much younger
someone outside of wash dc
someone who has not and does not offend conservatives
but someone who is very likable and communicates without greatly offending moderates and independents either
male or female, they will be married and have children
they will be well liked in their home state and that state will be important but not particularly safe at this time, unless the national ticket has a positive figure on it from that state
politics, not pure political philosophy will make the vp choice

McCain needs a conservative governor. I don’t know who but that is the best way to balance this ticket.

Two dinosaurs ... against a young Obama? Shades of Bob Dole.
