Well, to be accurate, Coolidge never would have “made it to the top spot” either, except for a small medical problem with a guy named Harding! Like many veeps, he was put there to get him out of the way. I love Cal, but he had some good timing.

While Harding's death was "convenient" it seems to me that, of the little I have read, Coolidge wasn't involved in any of the scandals that would come out after Hardings death. That is I have never read anything to give me an impression that Cal would have, or even had the inkling, to be involved in a such a nefarious possibility.

No, you misread me. I certainly didn’t mean that Cal was in any way involved. Only that had he run at the top of the ticket in 1920, I think he would have lost-—but once the economy was humming, he was electable. He probably could have won in 1928, too-—but some say he knew hard times were coming. Others say he was too broken hearted over his son’s death while in the WH. I was just making a joke about poor old Warren.
