Notable Americans Thomas Jefferson and Martin Luther King, Jr. are suing Democrat presidential candidate Barack Obama and Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick for plagiarism and other legal intrusions, according to court documents released Monday.
Jefferson and King filed complaints in absentia with the 11th District Court of Appeals late Saturday night. The suits were filed separately, but privately council for both parties expressed shock that such famous Americana was so blatantly stolen, without attribution.
In a speech to supporters Saturday night in Wisconsin, Obama allegedly used portions of a speech made by Dr. King and writings attributed to Mr. Jefferson.
Dont tell me words dont matter! I have a dream. Just words, Obama said. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal. Just words!
Governor Patrick gave a similar speech in October 2006.
But her dismissive point, and I hear it a lot from her staff, is that all I have to offer is words just words. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal. Just words just words! Patrick said. I have a dream Just words!
In a rotary phone call with reporters Monday, King also accused Obama of infringing on his likeness in virtually every speech hes ever given.
The resemblance is uncanny and sickening, Dr. King said. The difference between myself and Mr. Obama is that I used those words to lead a movement against racism. Mr. Obama, it appears, is racing against my movement. And the finish line in the Democratic nomination.
Kings suit complains not only of copyright infringement, but also that Obamas version of the speech was not delivered with enough force and charisma.
When youre using my words to say nothing, it takes away from the meaning, Dr. King said.
In protest, Dr. King has scheduled a press conference Tuesday in order to endorse likely Republican presidential candidate John McCain.
In response, the Obama campaign released a statement claiming King supported the campaign of the Illinois senator for President.
Were not too worried about it. After all, originality is undetected plagiarism, the statement said.
A search revealed that quote to be attributed to 19th-century British priest and suspected slave owner William Ralph Inge.
Mr. Jefferson, who claims to have authored the Declaration of Independence, did not immediately return an email request for comment.
Obama might get a pass, however.
Its funny that they quote Dr. King...a noted Plagiarist.
Perhaps Obama should just say he was "sampling" Gov. Patrick's speeches. After all, the "sampling" excuse worked for P Diddy.
LOL
Hillarys campaign is considering suing Obama for plagiarism. Egged on by McCains economic advisor, Kevin Hassetts contention that Obamas economic plan is the most shameless piece of plagiarism that I have ever seen,” Clintons brain-trust is reportedly weighing the option of filing a lawsuit.
Everything in Senator Obamas platform can be traced back to one or more of Senator Clintons million ideas for America, said Susan Lutes, attorney for the Clinton campaign. Senator Clinton has staked out a comprehensive claim to every nuance of the nanny-state. There isnt anything Obama can promise that she hasnt already promised.
Lutes threatened that if Obama doesnt immediately cease and desist the damages could run into the trillions of dollars.
