The new factor in the present equation is purely internal weakness within the west. Both politically and demographically. All of it self inflicted.
Islam hasn't been even close to politically united since the Mongols smashed the Abassid caliphate in the 13th century. Their ideology is singularly unattractive, particularly so since the west adopted religious toleration and the enlightenment and modern free economies. As enemies go, they are utterly pathetic compared to powers we have seen off in living memory. No healthy civilization would fear them in the slightest.
You know, on a very different subject, this is the reason why I chose to be a conservative. Here we are having this pleasant conversation using reason, historical references, a pride for our Western culture, and polite discourse. I would doubt if one in a thousand liberals know anything about the history of Islam, or their own culture, for that matter.
I’ve seen what goes for discussion on the Daily Kos and Democrat Underground. It makes me proud to be on this side of political dialogue.
This period of vacillation will be temporary if folks like you and I are out there. Keep up the good fight, my friend.
