As always, I voted a straight Rep ticket in 2000 and 2004. Amnesty was not part of the platform. The 2006 Senate bill [S. 2611] that passed was amnesty and so was McCain-Kennedy. chiMcCain was one of the chief architects of both bills and the WH supported him. If I had known that that was the WH position in either 2000 or 2004, I would not have voted for Bush.
Amnesty was never good either now or in 1986. I find it interesting that McCain voted AGAINST the 1986 amnesty bill despite being a "footsoldier in the Reagan Revolution."
In 2004, the GOP platform included the following:
Note the BOLD part. The 2004 GOP platform called for a plan that allows illegal immigrants to convert to a legal means of working here. Which is what the President's immigration plan (which McCain supported) called for.
You might want to check the 2000 platform, too because it also calls for means to allow families to stay together (anchor babies), and calls for a long-term plan to increase economic growth of Central and South America as well as the Caribbean.
So I guess you're as much as an "open borders nut" as John McCain, considering you've voted - willingly and openly - for the party espousing such "amnesty".
Border Security
"Our nation has been enriched by immigrants seeking a better life. In many cases, immigrants of the past fled violence and oppression searching for peace and freedom. All suffered and sacrificed but hoped for a better future for their children in America. Our nation has been enriched by their determination, energy, and diversity.
Ensuring the integrity of our borders is vital to ensuring the safety of our citizens. We must know the identity of all visitors who enter the United States, and we must knowwhen they leave. The US-VISIT system, which uses biometric data to better track theentry and exit of foreign travelers, has been implemented at more than 115 airports and ispresently being implemented at land border crossings. Reconnaissance cameras, borderpatrol agents, and unmanned aerial flights have all been increased at our borders."
"We must strengthen our Border Patrol to stop illegal crossings, and we will equipthe Border Patrol with the tools, technologies, structures, and sufficient force necessary tosecure the border. We will seek stiff penalties for those who smuggle illegal aliens intothe country and for those who sell fraudulent documents. We urge continued support forstate, local, and federal law enforcement to work in a cohesive manner in securing ourborders to prevent illegal entry.
Why didn't the WH or McCain support the 2005 Enforcement first bill, sponsored by Jim Sensenbrenner, that passed the House in Dec 2005? Why after more than six years after 9/11, the borders remain unsecured and the US-Visit act has still not been fully implemented?
