Seeking help from the Free Republic extended family regarding how to locate someone who is an adult child that has been estranged from their mother for two years. My friend is the mother.
I said I would ask the FR family since people here are the best resource on just about any topic. Thanks in advance for any help - will check back later today.
Apologize for the vanity.
Honestly I think she should spend some money. From what I’ve read US search is pretty inexpensive and fairly sucessfull.
If she has her social security number she can look for her via the social secutity administration. Had a friend that did this and was successful although they did not give her an address until the family member agreed they could.
Too little information for me to be of any help.
But anyway you should start from where the person was last known to live.
Might try the people search here....http://www.itools.com/
won’t give you specifics without paying, but it could give you the city assuming the name is not too common.
Your friend might get a lead if she checks to see if the daughter has gotten a copy of her own birth certificate. I suspect they’ll give the parents that info. When I lost all my ID my mother could get my birth certificate even though I couldn’t.
I know someone who paid $14.95 for a thirty-day use of one of the locators on the internet. Found several people, from an estranged brother to old friends from high school. Money well spent.
Thank you for your responses. Will check back later.
First, one needs to know if the person may be hiding or if they are not and just need to be located. Those in hiding require more sophisticated methods to locate and you may need a Private Investigator. If they are not hiding,(or not hiding well) usually a search via a private database with a SS number will locate them or with an old address within the last say 5 years. It sounds like you already tried that?
Do they have a common last name or is it somewhat unusual, do you have any idea what state they may be in? Maybe they kept in contact with friends still in the area who might share that info. If they are in thought to be in the same county, check the courthouse and recorders office.
It may be as simple as sending them a letter marked in one of the following ways(I suggest the second one first):
Address Correction Service - The Postal Service offers an address correction service on mail undeliverable as addressed which has been labeled “Address Correction Requested.” If the addressee has moved and filed a forwarding address, the Postal Service will forward the mail to the addressee and notify the sender of the new
address. The sender will be charged a nominal fee collected as postage due when notified of the new address. If the addressee has moved but no forwarding address is on file, the mail will be returned to the sender. Correctly addressed mail will be delivered with no notice to the sender.
Mail may also be labeled “Address Correction Requested - Do Not Forward.” In such cases, mail undeliverable as addressed will be returned the sender along with the new address if known.
Scary good.

Very helpful information, thank you.
And the Post Office will actually send back the mail with the new address on the envelope? Didn’t know the USPS would do that for individuals sending mail - but did know they do this for bill collectors and businesses.
Do not think the person is in hiding in general = just not easily located right now.
Thanks very much! Will try them!
bkmk
She’s not willing to spend the money to find him/her? Sorry, I don’t understand that on any level. If I were down to my last penny and looking for my child, I would spend it.
Like I said, it’s a complicated situation. Thanks.
