The Florida Republican Party privately believes that there is a core of 5% of the conservatives who will not, under any circumstances, vote for McCain. I think the party is being optimistic. The only way the base unites is if there’s a large scale terrorist atatck on our soil between now and then, and since the terrorist leaders pay attention to our politics, I don’t expect that to happen.

I phrased that wrong. To be precise, the party at this point in the process believes that 5% of Florida Republican voters will stay home in November. They’re panicked about what that means lower down on the ballot.
