Yes, paying for your own defense IS expensive. But paying for the World’s defense has made us the master of the globe, and we can well afford it as long as our vibrant capitalist market doesn’t become as moribund as Europe.
Our troops being in Germany and Korea and Iraq is a good thing for the U.S.A. for Germany for Korea and for Iraq; and good for the world.
We will leave Iraq when and if Iraq asks us to go. And that will not mean we will leave the Middle East in some Ron Paul fit of isolationism, we would move our troops to Kuwait or Saudi Arabia or Afghanistan.

Seen the stock market lately?
What were gas prices like in say...spring of ‘99?
What are you going to do with your “rebate” check?
Our economy is not “vibrant” as you describe it. It could regain past heights but the givernment is going to need to cut spending across the board in order to make that happen.

We are still there because that government wants us there. It is far more desirable than paying for their own defense. That is pretty much what I thought you might say.
Thank you.
You have no idea what you're talking about. That particularly base has a whole lot to do with OUR defense.

However Bush was too stupid to purge the rats that infested both the state department and high level agencies in our own nation. It might have been politically impossible. The President simply doesn't have enough authority to countermand the media's orders on certain subjects.

"Someone used the phrase 'perfumed prince' about him, and I'm not sure that's the correct label for him."
In view of the pic at post# 8, "cologned queen" might be more apt.
(Actually, I recall that the "perfumed prince" moniker was hoiw he was referred to by his military staff.)

Is that why we’re in Guantanamo Bay and Diego Garcia? To defend Cuba and a rock in the ocean? Please. The interest in our bases is mutual (except, of course, for Cuba).

When McCain made that comment. He was referring to the length of time we have remained overseas after ww2
In all probability and if Iraq gov allows it.We will be there for a very long time.
