The gunman who fatally shot five students before killing himself in a Northern Illinois University lecture hall had planned his murder spree almost a week in advance, investigators said Friday.
The graduate student bought two of his four guns at a Chmpaign, Ill. gun store Saturday indicating that he had been planning his assault for at least six days, police said.
The gunman, Stephen Kazmierczak, 27, a one-time undergraduate and award-winning sociology graduate student at NIU who campus Police Chief Donald Grady said was "revered by faculty and staff" and gave "no indication that this was the type of person who would engage in this activity." Kazmierczak had recently stopped taking his medication and became erratic, Grady told reporters.
The fifth student died this morning from gunshot wounds suffered when Kazmierczak opened fire Thursday afternoon at NIU in DeKalb, Ill.
The shooter fired 54 rounds from the weapons, claimed a total of six lives, including himself, and wounded 16.
Kazmierczak, dressed in black, was armed with three handguns and a shotgun as students took cover beneath desks and ran out of the lecture hall. He was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
He carried the shotgun concealed in a guitar case and the hanguns under his coat. He entered the hall through a door near the front of the room's stage.
No note has been found and no motive is yet known, Grady said.
In all, there were 23 casualties in the shooting, including the gunman. Several of the victims were taken to hospitals, where three later died. The others, including the shooter, died at the scene of the gunfire.
Gun control would have prevented this, NOT!
I’m sure this will lead to even more Draconian gun laws.
It’s hard to get much tougher than they already are in Illinois. Not that that would keep them from trying though.
I was listening to a radio program this morning, and they were talking about how news coverage eventually gets around to portraying the perpetrator as a victim. Including him among the "casualties" is a start.

How is it that before we had all these gun laws and before we had all these meds, this sort of thing never happened?
Something about not taking his meds? What meds was he on? Bipolar?
had recently stopped taking his medication and “had become somewhat erratic,”
I thought the danger is when somebody is ON medications
not OFF
Most of these suicidal school killers seem to fit that profile.
The most important line in the article, and the journalist couldn't be bothered to get more details.
This is the “Duke Nukem” generation coming of age.

The problem is the mental illness. That's common among all these mass shootings.
From the best I can tell, these types of shooting have been ocuring since the mid 1970’s.
Rumor is that he did the usual. He was supposed to be taking psycho drugs and quit taking them.
Was this a gun-free zone?
Given what people who knew him are saying, I’m guessing he was Schizophrenic. The “voices” drive these people to do strange things. You can’t predict them, and medication is crucial. A gun would have been the only thing that would have stopped him after the first shotgun blast. This is so sad. He actually probably had no beef with anyone who was shot.
off his meds one article said.
