I highly recommend the aforementioned book, And The Band Played On, for anyone who dares to be clued in on the finer points of homosexual practice. Shilts’ reporting pulled no punches. When I read the book, it was so frank I did not suspect that Shilts himself had AIDS, which he later died from. WARNING...GRAPHIC...Read about men in private bathhouse rooms lying on their stomachs next to a can of Crisco, “taking on all comers.” Read about ‘fisting’ and the “prime taste treat” of ‘rimming’ which will give you a nice case of giardia from ingesting human waste. It is not for the faint hearted or weak stomached, but it will wake people up to reality. HBO made a good but sanitized movie version. Shilts was a brave man who chronicalled the outbreak and the deathstyle that wrought it.
