Cuba demands US gives back Guantanamo Bay

CUBA has demanded the US return Guantanamo Bay to the island nation and denounced the "war on terror" prison, where six detainees could face the death penalty. Cuba's Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque claimed today that suspects held in the US naval base in the southeastern tip of Cuba have been subjected to torture and face unfair legal treatment. Cuba rejects "the violation of human rights, unjust incarceration of prisoners held there without charges, and their appearance in courts without guarantees and in which they are convicted in advance,'' he told reporters. He did not directly refer to the case of six detainees facing charges that carry the death penalty. "We demand again the closure of the indecent Guantanamo prison, the return of the territory illegally occupied to our fatherland,'' Perez Roque said. The United States, which has occupied Guantanamo for more than 100 years, signed in 1934 a lease agreement with the Cuban government that could not be altered without agreement by both countries. Since 1960, a year after it came to power, Fidel Castro's communist government has refused the annual lease payment of 5000 dollars from the United States. The US Defence Department announced Monday that military prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against six Al-Qaeda detainees on murder and conspiracy charges in the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.

There’s a contingent of neo-confederates on FR who will tell you that Cuba would be justified in beginning to shell Guantanamo now, just as South Carolina was justified in shelling Ft. Sumter when the US army refused to abandon it.

President Bush should invite Fidel to come to Washington and discuss it, face to face.

Cuba could be ours in a matter of hours

Just like the Bay of Pigs?

Except that was before the Navy was gutted by the Clintons and the Bushes.

I grew up in Guantanamo Bay. Loved it there. I get nostalgic when I see clips of Gitmo on the news.

Nobody’s worried about our Marines at Guantanamo, least of all myself. But the `massive peaceful invasion’ scenario just might work if the Cuban regime senses failure of will in whoever is POTUS.

Recall during the 1980’s how Walter Cronkite and other media lefties actually counseled passive resistance in the event of a Warsaw Pact invasion of Western Europe? The old coot said something like, “if thousands of us lay down in the path of Soviet tanks, what would they do?”

Somebody wrote in reply, “About twenty miles per hour, in second gear.”

Castro hasn’t survived this long in power by being stupid. But he’ll exploit any weakness in POTUS leadership and he’s done it before.

Mariel Boatlift 1980, anyone?

Quite a predicament. I'm sure there is a plan for that in place and the Marines would slowly and methodically evacuate rather than open fire on civilians. .

My wife is Cuban. If JFK had only allowed a single plane to leave the carrier during the Bay of Pigs, Castro would be a footnote. Instead, all of those brave men were led to the slaughter by that treachorous piece of human excrement, the great JFK.

And there would have been no Cuban missle crisis.

That is the irony. Historians always praise him for his leadership when all he did was get out of a problem of his own making.

We are still paying for become global policeman thanks to Wilson, we are bankrupt from LBJ's great society, etc...Liberals make future generations pay. I don't agree with McCain, but I cannot even fathom the price future generations will pay because of Obama or Hillary.

"Molon Labe"

I think that within the next 4 years, Cuba and her people will finally be free of the evil of Castro. Death comes to everyone... even Fidel. Until that time, Castro is welcome to try and take our base from us.

A display of how our Marines can kill might just shake loose some more information from the detainees.

it was the air cover which Kennedy withheld that caused the defeat at the Bay of Pigs

the expatriate Cubans practiced for the raid on No Name Key and set off from Safe Harbor Marina on Stock Island

the missile launching pads and bunkers are still visible at the east end of the runway at Key West airport

On most any given day the fire power at NAS Key West (on Boca Chica Key) alone would make short work of the Cuban Air Force ... and there are always a few SEAL teams training there and on Sigsbee

If Castro gets frisky and we have the volition it would be a very short one sided skirmish

.

Don't forget the last - minute change of landing beaches.

he expatriate Cubans practiced for the raid on No Name Key and set off from Safe Harbor Marina on Stock Island

The Cuban patriots trained and sailed from Central America.

perhaps some but, those who landed without air cover at the Bay of Pigs left from Safe Harbor marina on Stock Island after months of US 'training' on No Name Key
