Marry Him! The case for settling for Mr. Good Enough
Atlantic Monthly ^ | March 2008 | Lori Gottlieb

Posted on 02/14/2008 6:25:05 AM PST by reaganaut1

About six months after my son was born, he and I were sitting on a blanket at the park with a close friend and her daughter. It was a sunny summer weekend, and other parents and their kids picnicked nearby—mothers munching berries and lounging on the grass, fathers tossing balls with their giddy toddlers. My friend and I, who, in fits of self-empowerment, had conceived our babies with donor sperm because we hadn’t met Mr. Right yet, surveyed the idyllic scene.

“Ah, this is the dream,” I said, and we nodded in silence for a minute, then burst out laughing. In some ways, I meant it: we’d both dreamed of motherhood, and here we were, picnicking in the park with our children. But it was also decidedly not the dream. The dream, like that of our mothers and their mothers from time immemorial, was to fall in love, get married, and live happily ever after. Of course, we’d be loath to admit it in this day and age, but ask any soul-baring 40-year-old single heterosexual woman what she most longs for in life, and she probably won’t tell you it’s a better career or a smaller waistline or a bigger apartment. Most likely, she’ll say that what she really wants is a husband (and, by extension, a child).

Awww, thank you nully, Happy Valentine’s Day to you, too.

And,

Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone.

It’s kind of funny or sad as it were, but you used to see NOW (National Organization of Women), i think, in the news on a pretty regular basis. Gloria Stienem and Pat Ireland were always weighing in on some issue with their usual liberal drivel.

Where did NOW go? Never see em anymore...

Have they endorsed Hillary?

True story-—
I know a man who was married for about 25 years who was basically clueless when it came to, erm, how a woman worked.
His wife had pretty much faked it the entire time. Why, I don’t know.

One day, she left him (I think she’d had enough of pretending bells and whistles were going off). Everyone was talking about how could Suzie leave the perfect husband!
Heck, even he was floored as to why she could have left him-— he was the perfect guy.

It wasn’t until he was dating women who weren’t faking it that he realized that he’d had 25 years of one sided sex.

He was absolutely crushed....and by then, the women he dated had no patience at that point.

Traditions became traditions because they work! (Plus it is just so much safer.) In all honesty, I don’t think that men or women have it easy in our current society. Both men and women FReepers are making some good points on this thread, which is why I enjoy these threads.

Is there a ping list for these types of threads?

“And now that you’re not worrying about it..I guarantee you’ll meet the right person.”

I laughingly thought about that and in reality it makes me a bit nervous. I finally get to be comfortable with myself and that could bring the additional risk. LOL! I do know what you mean and I’ll just sit back and relax.

Tragic. finding out it was your fault but she was lying to you the whole time at the same time. Crush does not begin to cover that. Poor guy. How was he to know?

This is a depressing day for me.

I had to move on from the women, I thought was the woman of my dreams. She wasn't.

No prospects are on the horizon.

It's Valentines Day.

Then I read this article.

lol, reminds me of this one:

A father and his son were walking through Rite-Aid one day when they happened across the condom section. The son asked the dad "Dad, what's this 3-pack of condoms for?"

The father replied "well, son, that's for when you're in high school. You have one for Friday night and two for Saturday night."

"Hmmm," replied the son, "well what's the 6-pack of condoms for?"

The father replied "well, son, that's for when you're in college. You have two for Friday night, two for Saturday night, and two for Sunday."

"OK, dad, what's the 12-pack for then?"

The father replies "that's for when you're married - you have one for January, one for February, one for March..."

Often they are much worse. You can get a couple disgruntled people that make some woman or man hater comment and then hackles get up and the thread devolves. into a steady stream of generalizations all of which have a grain of truth and are take as insults by people that they totally don’t apply to (the grain doesn’t but the generalized version does). They are good for popcorn though.

At this stage in my life I have simply given up and am pretty ambivilent about the whole dating thing.

I feel exactly the same way.

I don't know if I'm quite part of this club yet, but I'm filling in the membership form even as we speak. And I'm only 4 years removed from college...

I won’t go into the gory details, but he wasn’t exactly someone who took critcism well.... which may be a clue as to why his wife had faked it (not letting her off the hook mind you).

But sometimes, the two wrong folks end up in bed together and....one won’t listen and the other won’t talk. And I swear on my Grannie’s chamber pot, it’s a true story.

My advise to single women who want to find a mate...don’t have bastard children.

No self respecting man wants to provide for the progeny of another.

While this is generally sound advice, I disagree with it being an absolute.

My son is the "progeny" of another. I love him as my own. Not because it is the "right" or "expected" thing to do, but I love him. I can't help it.

He's my son. He couldn't be closer if he truly were flesh and blood.

Don’t give up.... I did not get married until I was 35yo when I found my beautiful wife and now I am the proud father of two beautiful children.

It will happen and you will not only be more realistic about it when it does but you may even appreciate it more!
