WASHINGTON (CNN) — Republican presidential candidate John McCain, who almost always refuses to speak on the campaign trail about his son serving in the military, got a rousing reception Wednesday when he told a private gathering of House Republican congressman that his son Jimmy — whose Marine unit had been deployed to Iraq — had arrived home from safely.
According to three GOP sources present at the closed meeting of the House Republican Conference, the Arizona senator said that when his son first arrived in the country, he reported seeing IEDs everywhere — but when he recently left, some seven months later, Iraq had become so safe he was handing out soccer balls.

That’s one thing you can’t take away from McCain, his family has a military history second to none. Which makes it even more puzzleing that he’s for national offense but against national defense.
Has been my prayer that his children return safely. I want NO Vietnam repeats.

What is “home from safely”? CNN had two people to write this bad grammar.
Yes, they should be very proud. The willingness to “walk the walk” in a military sense distinguishes McCain and his family from the other GOP candidates and their families. Maybe that was a factor.
I don’t think McCain’s son is 35 or older, so he can’t be VP. He might only be in his early 20s. He’s pretty young, IIRC.
I must give McCain credit for having a son in the Marines in Iraq, and not having made a big deal out of it.
