elpadre asks: "so the Pentagon wished to unilaterally break the treaty?"

No, of course not. The Pentagon has no authority to honor a treaty or break it. It follows the orders of the President.

When the President finally got around to ordering combat troops into Vietnam in 1965, the Pentagon did its duty and deployed them.

All the same, the Joint Chiefs had insisted since 1954 that China was the real problem in Southeast Asia, not Hanoi. You may recall that General Douglas MacArthur made the same argument during the Korean War.

“You may recall that General Douglas MacArthur made the same argument during the Korean War.”

I remember Korea all too well. As a young artillery officer in Korea &lsquo '52-'53, I know the Chinese had taken over a large part of the ground combat. I still remember those quilted winter uniforms.

- and Washington’s adamant refusal to bomb north of the border. The Chinese were in essence given a free ride costing many American and ROK lives.

You have my utmost respect, sir. Based upon what I've read and heard, that was a very hard fight in Korea.

I agree with you 100%...NEVER FORGET. We must be ever vigilent, but unfortunately we have the likes of killer who would sell us down the river in a heart beat to communism.

We must also watch obama. He looks like a full blown 100% communist too. As all democrats, obama spoke to some university and said he would give each univ. student $4000.00 and all they had to do was community service of some kind...never mentioned serving in the military, which gives a better “scholorship” than obama/
