Israel Denies It Killed Wanted Militant

JERUSALEM (AP) - Israel on Wednesday denied involvement in the assassination of Hezbollah fugitive Imad Mughniyeh, a militant also wanted by the U.S. for his suspected role in the death of hundreds of Americans.

“Israel is looking into the reports from Lebanon or from Syria regarding the death of a senior Hezbollah official, and is learning for the first time the details being reported in the media in the past few hours,” Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s office said.

“Israel rejects the attempt by terror groups to attribute to it any involvement in this incident. We have nothing further to add,” read the office’s statement.

Hezbollah charged that Israeli agents were behind the death of Mughniyeh, who was reported to have been killed in a car bomb explosion in Damascus, the Syrian capital, on Tuesday night.

The killing was a blow to the Lebanese group, which fought a bitter 34-day war against Israel last summer.

Mughniyeh was charged with involvement in a string of attacks against U.S., Israel and Jewish targets since the 1980s.
