WASHINGTON -- Sen. John McCain, a passionate advocate of limits on campaign finances, is turning down government matching funds for the primary season to free him to spend more money as he prepares for a general election contest.
McCain, who appears headed to win the Republican presidential nomination, sent letters to the Federal Election Commission and the Treasury Department notifying them of his decision to withdraw from the presidential election financing system.
McCain had asked to participate in the public system last summer when his campaign, his fundraising and his poll numbers hit a low point that threatened to unravel his candidacy.
Though the FEC declared him eligible to receive $5.8 million in December, the money would not have become available until next month.
By accepting the money, moreover, McCain would have been required to limit his spending for the primary to about $54 million -- an amount the campaign was close to reaching.

Yeah, I guess Soros’ money is just too hard to turn down...
Ping.
So who is giving him money? I don’t even want a bumper sticker from this guy.
I’m sure it was a typo. Perhaps the mod could fix it.
Seriously...all you have to do is imagine Obama or Hillary in the white house with a democratic congress...say goodbye to the tax cuts, free trade, and judges that apply the law as written, and say hello to higher taxes, higher prices, and jackpot justice.
It ain’t that hard to vote for him.
Actually, that should be “hiss elf”. You know - the short snake with a pointy hat... ;-P
This guy is doomed once he gets the nomination. He’s just too easy of a target for the MSM.
I was watching Special Report last night, and Jeff Birbaum said McCain should send out Conservative surrogates to deal with us, while McCain himself kept cozying up with the left. McCain is now a man with no core, just pimping for votes.
No typo. It was intentional.
Go Huck!
Dear Conservatives,
Nevermind what I tell you. “You shall know me by my fruits”.
Reform for thee, but not for me.
Free speech for me, but not for thee.
Luv ya,
John
P.S. Now send me MONEY, #$%^&*( it!
PLEASE vote for Mike Huckabee today and say NO to McCain. We do not want Liberals and Independents choosing our candidates. A vote for Huckabee will probably never make him the winner but he may pull enough delegates to keep McCain from winning. Then we will have a Brokered Convention with only real Republicans choose our candidate. We can rally behind a hand chosen conservative who can unite the party and take us to victory. A vote for Huckabee in a vote against McCain and his stand to let 12-20 million illegals stay in our country!
While it is possible to get FEC approval to change your mind, since the FEC is short 3 members (due to Congress stonewalling the Bush admin.) the FEC does not have a quorum (during a national election for President and Congress). Without a quorum, the FEC cannot approve McCain's flip-flop, so he may be acting illegally.
But what the heck, he probably will only get a $100,000 wrist-slap after the election, a la Billary's many fundraising fiascos.
I guess we better work awfully hard, then, to make sure they don't have a Democrat Congress.
