The recent emergence of Chelsea Clinton as a voice for her mother's campaign has resulted in a chorus of "poor Chelsea" from various sources. Ms. Clinton is still deeply wary of the media, and the sentiment may be valid; her life has been dominated by attention she never chose to engender. But it's got a nefarious underside, as exhibited by the suspension Friday of David Shuster, a commentator for Hardball who got put in the naughty chair for asking on the air whether Clinton had "pimped out" her daughter. Pimping is a common enough euphemism in modern parlance, but one which an indignant Hillary Clinton has managed to turn into a carnival of pity and remonstrations.
I am not unfamiliar with said carnival. Back in 1997, as a surly student journalist at U.C. Berkeley, I made a couple of comments about the use of Chelsea as a prop for controversy-free photo ops when her parents dropped her off for her first semester of college at Stanford. Scraping for something to say about the upcoming football game between Cal and Stanford, I criticized my school's rival for pouring resources into the circus surrounding Chelsea's arrival, suggesting that they were more concerned with maintaining a pristine, photogenic student body than educating as large and diverse a population as possible. I then encouraged Berkeley students to share our less refined ways by trashing the campus, including Ms. Clinton. Sure, my line "show your spirit on Chelsea's bloodied carcass" was over the top and poorly chosen. And then the AP wire snipped my column's line, "Chelsea Clinton represents the Stanford ethos of establishment worship which must be subverted and destroyed," into "Chelsea Clinton must be destroyed." (The column is no longer available online.)
The comments made their way to Mrs. Clinton,

Just think, Chelsea is 5 years older than Monica was--when Monica was serving our country as a Presidential staffer and performing her "Presidential duties"!
I believe she is.
Our tax dollars at work! The Secret Service must be stretched pretty thin since they have to protect all of the presidential candidates and their families. I especially pity the ones who draw the Clinton detail!
Sorry, but I quite agree that describing Chelsea Clinton campaigning for her parents as “pimping her out” is classless. The fact that the phrase has common parlance among certain groups is no excuse. There are lots of phrases that have common parlance that have no place in political debate - they wouldn’t print “Hillary is a f**king bitch”, and God knows that’s got common parlance.
Chelsea is not a minor anymore, and if she’s going to be in the public eye campaigning for her parents then her remarks and actions are legitimately open to analysis and criticism. But to use vulgarisms such as “pimping” to describe that is out of line.
There you go. Spiffed it up a bit.
So is "Ho", but that didn't stop the avalanche of overreaction against Don Imus.
“her life has been dominated by attention she never chose to engender.”
Say what? These people are media whores of the highest
magnitude! They thrive on attention. Just not some kinds
of it.
I don’t care if they do or not, but what is the point of scrutinizing Chelsea? Just ignore her, and she’ll go away after her momma loses.
“If she’s out there stumping for mommy dearest, she’s fair game”
once she enters the political arena, as she has big time, then she should receive all the questions and other scrutiny other politicos endure. She’s on her own now!
LOL!!
My first Laugh of the day!
that look with the quote is priceless.
That was exactly Shuster’s response/explanation for his comment in his initial emails, and I think it has merit.
In fact, Shuster even gave Chels a break in that he focused, not on the fact that she was just out there campaigning, but that she was also making closed-door calls to superdelegates.
IOW, what she did in public at least could be scrutinized even if she didn’t submit to questions. But getting down and dirty by essentially lobbying superdelegates, in a race as tight as this one, led him to conclude that such a person should not be totally off-limits to the media.
Can’t blame him for his reaction.
If Shuster saw Keith Olberman’s apology on his behalf-—which I unfortunately stumbled upon while channel surfing-—he’ll now have a clue why the rest of us despise the smarmy Keith so much.
Here’s the thing: the Hildabeast absolutely LOVES the fact that this has been the story for the last days. She gets to be the victim, the wronged and protective and defiant mother figure, the little woman all those mean men pick on her.
Hildy CHOSE to publically release her letter of anguish and admonishment to msnbc, effectively pimping them out against their wishes as well.
She couldn’t have written a better script for Chelsea’s role. She knows she attracts the “female vote” whenever she’s a victim and especially when she’s the mama bear victim.
She does look like Webb. However, who knows? They are allinbred and intermix in Arkansas, lol.
And from that picture, it's obvious she's never learned what Bill wanted Monica never to forget: NO TEETH!
Oh what evil Webb’s we leave, when first we practice to conceive.
