I’m a 14 year survivor of esophogeal cancer... very lucky to have found it early (at age 46) by a very good internist and then quickly referred to the best surgeon in the world at Sloan Kettering. 10 days elapsed from the time my tumor was “discovered/determined” and when it was removed. If I was living in Canada... well, I’d hate to consider the result.

All comments about Lantos aside - I studied cancer in my last course, and once it gets a chance to get a foothold it literally takes over the cell's reproductive functions and transforms it into something completely alien.

ROFL! Good one.

Roy Scheider, the actor fom “Jaws”, also died today.

I guess that’s our three celebrities for this week.

I knew him in the fifties when he played at Child’s Paramount and Jimmy Ryan’s.

A much, much greater loss to society than that bum Lantos.

It’s up to God to decide, but my bet is he’s on his way to the flames.

Would that be because of his Jewish Faith?

He never really understood God or he couldn’t have voted so vigorously for the right to kill children in the womb. May he be remembered as the cancer on civilization that he was.

It never occurred to me that a Fellow Freeper believed he was the Gate Keeper to the Kingdom of Heaven.

I will pray for you.

That’s horrible... did she have no symptoms?

She did in fact have some edema (swelling of the lower extremities) but she was very good at hiding this from her family. My mom was so tough that when I started as a teacher she'd already been a retired teacher for many years and she decided to go back and substitute in an elementary school at the age of 75 or so. While there one afternoon she tripped, fell and broke her arm. She drove herself to the hospital for treatment, only calling me later to come give her a ride home!

She was 82 when she passed. Right up to the day she last went into the Hospital she was running (jogging) 2 miles a day. She and my dad were divorced in the 70's and he passed in 1980. She looked so young she would often be mistaken for her daughter's sister! Sis hated that but mom loved it! Mom was a party animal who really knew how to have fun and enjoy life.

Her passing so swiftly and peacefully was a blessing. It gave us children & grandchildren and friends time to say everything that we thought we might EVER want to say and to bid her goodbye. I know I'll see her again. I was holding her hand when she passed into Glory. It was exactly 11:17am on the 27th of OCT 1998.

She traveled so much that even to this day, I can't quite think of her as "gone," but rather I choose to think of her as on another walking tour of CHINA or someplace equally remote and distant. As I said, I'll see her again. Then the party will really begin and it'll never end.

When a butchering murder like Tom Lantos dies...

Who did he murder, how did he kill them?

RIP and condolences to his family.

Look at the sincere condolences being offered on this thread of FR. Can you imagine the thread on Daily Kos if one of ours (like Newt Gingerich or Bush) died?

It is not for you, nor I to determine who goes to Heaven. Instead, I will leave it up to God to decide who among us, Christian, Jew or Muslim goes to his Kingdom.

Judge not, lest ye be judged. I cannot abide his politics but I fear for his soul. May God judge him in righteousness and mercy.

And that weakness among us will be our doom. Good only wins when it is strong enough to do what is right, not blubber on with false sentimentality. I would prefer a FReep to go piss on his grave in the spirit of 40 million infants who never got to breath the air.

You are drawing close with your words, but I really wonder where your heart is, if you grieve so openly for a hypocrite who was instrumental in the deaths of millions. Why was there a funeral for him and not one for the many he helped kill? Where is your grieving for them?

I will pray for you.

That isn't quite sanctimonious enough.
