I just read (third-hand source) that McCain was waterboarded in Viet Nam. Never heard that before. Do you know anything about it?

I visited for the first time in my life 2 summers ago. I was given a personal tour by my brother. I walked along with him, softly touching banisters and chairs. I felt the floor beneath each step I took. The emotion of it finally overtook me

Something the Clintons NEVER did. They didn’t appreciate its granduer and history, not what it meant to citizens like you and me, and sullied it for their entire tenure.

Meanwhile, they left America vulnerable to her enemies and we have been digging out ever since.

"The Pittsburgh Tribune Review is very conservative. It is the one owned by Richard Mellon Scaife."

Recent events reverses that proof. From HotAir.com

There goes the right’s answer to George Soros in 2008...

Bill Clinton now finds himself the unlikeliest of Scaife heroes. Last month Ruddy posted a softball interview with Clinton on the Newsmax site (sample question: “What is the best thing about being an ex-president?”). A worshipful cover story followed in the current edition of the magazine. Clinton, it gushed, is “a political and cultural powerhouse” who is “part Merlin and part Midas—a politician with a magical touch.”

Ruddy tells NEWSWEEK he and Scaife believe Clinton’s life since leaving office has been “very laudable,” and that he is doing “very important work representing the country when the U.S. is widely resented in the world.”

Note: Ruddy is founder and editor of NewsMax. NewsMax is now also owned by Scaife.

ALERT: Scaife, Ruddy, NewsMax and "conservative" Pittsburgh Tribune Review... all gone over to the darkside?

I just read (third-hand source) that McCain was waterboarded in Viet Nam. Never heard that before. Do you know anything about it?

It's hard to tell as there are doubts about McCain's claims of torture. It hardly makes sense as McCain admits he voluntarily gave what military information he had in exchange for medical treatment. The NVN saw McCain as a propaganda tool and torture would be inconsistent with that.

"1999 - March 25, 1999, The Phoenix New Times: Ted Guy and Gordon "Swede" Larson, two former POWs, who were McCain's senior ranking officers (SRO's), at the time McCain says he was tortured in solitary confinement, told the New Times that while they could not guarantee that McCain was not physically harmed, they doubted it.

"Between the two of us, it's our belief, and to the best of our knowledge, that no prisoner was beaten or harmed physically in that camp [known as "The Plantation"]," Larson says. ". . . My only contention with the McCain deal is that while he was at The Plantation, to the best of my knowledge and Ted's knowledge, he was not physically abused in any way. No one was in that camp. It was the camp that people were released from."

In 1993, during one of his many trips back to Hanoi, McCain asked the Vietnamese not to make public the records they hold pertaining to returned U.S. POWs."

I see McCain was REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, helping his party, and his President get reelected during wartime.

Not.

“Maverick McCain rips GOP By Noelle Straub Friday, April 2, 2004

WASHINGTON - Sen. John McCain yesterday unleashed an attack on his own party, saying the GOP is ``astray’’ on key issues and criticizing President Bush [related, bio] on the war in Iraq.

*****``I believe my party has gone astray,’’ McCain said, criticizing GOP stands on environmental and minority issues.

*****``I think the Democratic Party is a fine party, and I have no problems with it, in their views and their philosophy,’’ he said. ``But I also feel the Republican Party can be brought back to the principles I articulated before.’’

*****The maverick senator made the remarks at a legislative seminar hosted by U.S. Rep. Martin T. Meehan (D-Lowell) as he again ruled out running on a ticket with Democrat John F. Kerry [related, bio].

*****The Arizona Republican took on President Bush for failing to prepare Americans for a long involvement in Iraq, saying, ``You can’t fly in on an aircraft carrier and declare victory and have the deaths continue. You can’t do that.’’

*****McCain said the U.S. should seek more U.N. involvement in Iraq. ``Many people in this room question, legitimately, whether we should have gone in or not,’’ he said, adding that that debate ``will be part of this presidential campaign.’”

Apparently that information comes from the book, "The Nightingale's Song," which I haven't read.

"In 1993, during one of his many trips back to Hanoi, McCain asked the Vietnamese not to make public the records they hold pertaining to returned U.S. POWs"

For certain people I suppose a line like that could suggest skullduggery. My question would be: "What good do records written by the enemy -- which could be held up to public scrutiny from here on out --do for these soldiers?"

They should be allowed to go home and live their lives in dignity.

...Sen. McCain delivered a stunning speech to the annual gathering of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington.

It was stunning in that he kept a straight face while claiming to be a conservative capable of uniting the party.

I guess I should just 'calm down".

So now John Kerry is credible? LOL!

Here is a sample of the coverage at the time:

“WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Sen. John McCain has rejected John Kerry’s request to consider being his running mate, dashing Democrats’ hopes for a bipartisan alliance with one of the nation’s most popular politicians, officials close to the talks say.

Kerry and McCain have discussed the vice presidency on several occasions, with the nominee-in-waiting sketching out a scenario under which McCain could have a significant role over defense and other issues, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because Kerry wants his deliberations kept secret.

Despite his respect for Kerry, McCain didn’t want to abandon his party and wasn’t sure the idea was workable, the officials said. Thus, he told Kerry within the last two weeks there would be no need to ask him again to consider the job, they said. “

Kerry can say whatever he will in 2008, in 2004, it Was Kerry asking McCain.
