WALLACE: I want to follow up on that. Whether it is interrogation of terror prisoners or the intercepting of surveillance among al Qaeda members, are you ever puzzled by all of the concern in this country about protecting of rights of people who want to kill us?
BUSH: That is an interesting way to put it. I wouldn't necessarily define some of the critics of my policy that way. I would say that they want to be very careful that we don't overstep our bounds from protecting the civil liberties of Americans.
And I understand that, a lot. I do think that some of the programs we have put in place on the -- like listening to people calling into America, that some of the claims about what we are doing have been exaggerated. And I don't think we ought to extend the same protections to terrorists overseas who want to kill us that we provide our own citizens when it comes to surveillance matters.
It's been a difficult issue for me because I am -- listen, I no more want to trample the civil liberties of the American people than anybody else does. On the other hand, I understand the nature of these people. And I understand the complexities of trying to protect the American people and I think we found a fine balance. I truly do.

That was fun to read. Wallace tries to get him to say it’ll be McCain, and he won’t. Then later CW tries to trick him with a question about the letter he’d write to the next president, and GWB says, “’Dear Republican President...’”
And CW injects bias, saying he should project to November, and the nominee will be dealing with a faltering economy...
BUSH: How do you know that?
WALLACE: Well it is as of this moment.
BUSH: You said November.
Misunderestimated again! :)
Hmmm ... No “where’s the fence”? Chris must be a pro-illegal-immigration guy.
I don’t care what anyone says, sum total, he is one of the great ones. I thought so from the beginning and I believe it now.
I agree. Even though GWB has his faults like we all do, i’m dreading the next White House. I will miss him badly.
“I make decisions on what I think is right for the United States based upon principles. I frankly don’t give a damn about the polls. And I darn sure don’t, you know, call a group of people together in a focus group and say, well, tell me what to think.” (President Bush from today’s interview w/ Chris Wallace)
While there are several places I have disagreed w/ President Bush, history will treat him kindly. Frankly, measured against actual accomplishments & not just rhetoric, I believe Pres. Bush has accomplished more for conservatives than Pres. Reagan did - particularly on taxes & the judiciary.
Thank you President Bush.
I think that was the best interview of President Bush I’ve ever read.
LOL! I love GWB's humor. Can you imagine Hillary being asked questions like this?
My new tagline.
It was fun to watch, CW had that “Well, that didn’t work.” look on his face through all that I saw. It was pretty good.
I saw it and it was great! I thought Chris Wallace was very deferential and respectful. It was obvious to me that he genuinely likes President Bush as a person. He was just being a good journalist when he was trying to get President Bush to say that he thought McCain would be the nominee. I think President Bush genuinely likes Chris Wallace also because he seemed so relaxed and completely at ease during the interview.
W told us he looked into Putin’s eyes and found him to be an honorable man. Now he tells us that McCain is a conservative. OK, so who am I supposed to believe, Bush or my own two eyes?
