But then what? If none of the others can win, where do we go from there?

Even if McCain ultimately takes the nomination, the squabbling may serve a useful purpose. It's clear that unless McCain has a meltdown so spectacular the media can't ignore it, Hillary or Obama will have no real opposition this election. There are, however, two other issues at stake:

  1. The numerical composition of Congress.
  2. The attitude of Congresscritters.
To protect #1, it's important that conservatives get to the polls and vote down-ticket. I would suggest that #2 would be best served by having conservatives make abundantly clear that they won't support the GOP unless they receive something better than a knife in the back. Conservatives look at politicians' records, and Republican politicians who want to keep their jobs had best remember that.
